What could be better.... hmm..... AC that works. Found out it doesn't.
I had an Elky a bout the same year. It was a switch under the dash that was giving us fits. For some reason it was located behind the glove box. It was the one that had taken a dunk in Lake Nacimiento. No alcohol? You get high on Wilbur Buds??
Although I have managed to sneak in a couple of margaritas this afternoon!
Headed out with some friends last night for Margaritas, must tell you I was extremely disappointed..
Plans for tonight.. HOMEWORK and spending some time with my mom, she's just about done washing her baby, so once she puts her to bed, I'll get some Mother daughter PIZZA time.

Eight hours of friggin' homework. you'll be cross eyed by the time Monday rolls around.

I'll check into that. I already ruled out the thermal limiter switch. Then there's the "ambient switch" on the coolant line itself. The wiring diagram is a bit confusing, but hopefully I'll make some sense out of it.
Did it take a dunk before or after the troubles you had?

Right now, just basic classes I need to get into the Nursing program which if everything stays on track I should enter into the Nursing program in the fall.. and from there Ill have a year of clinicals before I'm done! Im attending a private college, so its real fast pace, and is costing me a arm and both legs! But it will be so worth in when Im finished and working in the ER!

It looks like a "transistor" or bottle cap looking thing, small, hung out in the middle of nowhere, behind the glove box, going to the center of the dash. Should have it's own clip to snap into, but not necessarily. (looks like a mini-turn signal flasher, maybe?) '70's diagrams may not show them accurately.
Is that the one, John?

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

I don't remember it looking like a transister. I kept playing with it. I would get it to work (cycling the compressor) and when I got the dash put back together it would quit.

I had all the Schematics for almost every year of ELKY ! I may still have them.
But you can convert the Elky to 134-A. Most of the time its the Pressure on the Lines that is too low and the Pressure switch on the Dryer won't close.
But you can pull the Connector off of the Dryer and use an Alligator Clip Jumper Wire across the two wire on the Connector. This will engage the Clutch on the Compressor. Only do this to see if the Clutch Engages for a couple of seconds, then pull the jumper off. If the clutch does engage then the system needs checked for leaks and recharged.

That is going to be my next thing to test. It shows as "ambient switch" on my wiring diagram, but I did track the green wire from the clutch connector back to the pressure switch on the evap box. It's definitely been repaired in the past. The wire has a few splices in it, though done well (soldered and heat shrink over them).
As far as conversion, I don't want to invest too much time or effort on the system until I take the car apart for a proper restoration. I've been looking over the Vintage Air system - a lot more compact than the factory system. Sure would make for a much cleaner engine compartment!
