Firestone tire Question ?
Has anyone switched to Firestone Firehawk wide oval tires, if so what do you think? It looks like the rears are about 3/4 of an inch wider and the fronts are 1" taller. DO the rears look wider?

I have the Firehawks on my SSR can't say if the are noticably wider. The fronts look about the same height as the Goodyears but that's by eye. There are no clearance problems. I drives well and I really like the rim protector ribs. In General I like them very well but they do not like cold weather. We have had some temps in the low 30's and they are a little bumpy and squirelly till they warm up, also the traction is usually quite good but in cold weather they get hard an spin easily. To sum up, as long as you are not going to use them in cold weather I think they are great!

Are these the new Firestone Run Flats? If not, did you consider them although I do know Run Flats normally cost quite a bit more than non-Run Flats.

My guess is that the 27" is an error and so does the guy at the tire rack. I have some KDW2 245/40 in my front which IS 27" and looks much lower than the stock. If you calculate the 45% of 255mm, convert to inches , double that and add the rim size you get about 28". The KDW2 has been an incredible performing tire, but has gotton very noisy as they wear, which is often the case with aggressive tread designs. I have also been thinking about the Firestones, but but can't figure out why our size is only H rated while all the other sizes of this tire are Z rated.

27 doesn't seem to be an error for the GY - just the way they make that size. No answers as to why...

Maybe you are right, but my KDW (26.8") sure look a lot shorter than the stock goodyears. The rim looks significantly closer to the ground, which is one of the reasons I will be using something else when these need replacing besides the fact that they have gotton noisey. At this point am considering the Dunlops, or the Firestones. Also may even consider the Continental UHP which was developed for high performance SUV's , like the Cayanne. With these however would need a 255/50 front and a 295/45 rear. Concern with these tho is increased weight.

I went with the Dunlops and they do make the wheel 'look' closer to the ground but it's just the shape of the tire as they are more rounded than the GY. I had it side by side with an SSR with GYs and they were the same. Nice thing about the Dunlop and the FS is the correct load rating and higher speed ratings.

But on the tire rack site, they list our sizes of the FS as H rated, all the other sizes are Z rated. I checked the FS web site and its the same. Is that an error in the chart? I was hoping so. Does your sidewall info indicate the Z speed rateing?
Thanks
PS My bad. I just realized that you have the Dunlops which ARE Z rated in all sizes. If the FS are in fact H rated in our size , I will prob go with the Dunlops when its time. Although I like the idea of the Continental UHP in the higher profile front and rear, they are pretty heavy.
Thanks for your input.

New Tires
I have about 21,500 miles on my 05 SSR now, so I still have some tire wear left but I have been checking into replacements for them when they are due. I am planning on going with Toyo Proxes S/T when I do replace them, they are rated very high in all the performance categories and are even speed rated for at least 149 mph, and they are very reasonably priced I found them on the internet for $115 each for the front and $129 each for the back and about $52 shipping for all four. I am going with 255/40-19s in the front which are a tiny bit shorter but the stock 255/45-19 size is an oddball size that hardly anyone makes and is very pricy in the brands that do make it.
