Closing Out Threads
How do you close out a thread? I did one about replacing me battery a couple months ago - but now want to be able to show that thread closed(?). More importantly, threads where people post SSR Items for sale - then two years after all the items have been sold - the thread resurfaces. I've seen "CLOSED" captions before - but don't believe a lot of us know how to do it. HELP?

Not 100% certain on this one, NMR . . . but I believe the "thread close power" is strictly reserved for moderators.
by the way, GREAT IDEA to close those old buggers.
Threads only get "closed" (or locked) if a moderator or administrator locks it for some reason. Otherwise they are always open for further discussion. "Normal" posters like you and I don't have that option.

Oh - OK. I'm not trying to cause any trouble here - just stop people from resurrecting dead issues. I have gained a LOT of knowledge rooting around in old threads - so maybe "CLOSING" a thread wouldn't be appropriate. How about making it "INACTIVE" or of historical value?

No worries New Mexico Rambler... It does take a moderator to close a thread and its not something that is done too often. Even in sales that are completed, cuz you never know how something will be used... ie... someone bumped up a shirt thread that was no longer being made.. which inspired some to get new shirts made. It doesn't do any harm leaving them open... so we do..

Here's an option . . .
LOCKING an old thread making it READ ONLY and available for research purposes but not available for posting. This would really make sense for those For Sale threads after the item or items have been sold.

If the person who started the thread requests that it be closed, a moderator will do that. But we moderators do not have time to read every thread/post and then try to PM people about what has been sold or not sold, so it is up to the thread starter

As for selling something on the forum, I think the seller should either clear the first post that listing that items for sell or edit the first post with a simple note saying "ITEMS ARE SOLD THANK YOU FOR LOOKING"
That my $.02.

About Closing Threads
As previously mentioned we do not close threads unless there is a real need to do so. If someone wants their thread closed they should PM one of our Moderators or Administrators for their help.
We usually keep all threads open in case there is more interest in that topic in the future. Sometimes leaving it open can restart an old topic like Linda has mentioned above. BTW: As John has stated reading every post and PMing each and every member to see if they want their thread to be closed down is a lot of unnecessary work for all our Moderators.
Again, only the original owners (starter) of a thread should contact one of us if they feel a need that their thread should be closed and or locked down.
Note: Those that are selling parts should post that their parts/SSR/memorabilia are indeed sold.
