How do you remove and replace the battery for a 2004 SSR?

It's actually fairly easy to chnage the battery with the right technique. I am "between SSRs" right now, so will need to do this from memory:

- Put the truck where there is plenty of light, OR bring a shop light under there

- Put the truck on a surface you don't mind lying on (i.e. NOT gravel or mud). Bring a piece of carpet if you don't want to get your clothes dirty

- Bring your wrenches BEFORE you crawl under the truck

- Crawl under the truck, to the REAR of the battery (don't be wimpy about crawling under there if you have no lift. There is plenty of room)

- Unfasten the NEGATIVE terminal, and wedge it where it will NOT contact anything metallic on the truck (or better, TAPE it WELL). THIS IS A SAFETY and ANTI-DAMAGE PRECAUTION SO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY
Instruction per Jim G

- Unfasten the POSITIVE terminal, and wedge it where it will not contact anything metallic (or tape it)

- Undo whatever else might be holding the battery in the box (I cannot remember, and I like I said above, I am currently between SSRs)

- Here is the neat part: The battery tray swings down a few inches to enable easy removal and reinstallation of the battery! Swing it down!

- Remove battery

- Reverse above steps EXACTLY to reinstall. ESPECIALLY the order of the terminals.

Some additional "useful data":

Do not drop the friggin battery . . .

Do not try to open the doors with the battery disconnected. They cannot "index" the windows down without the battery, so you will tear the window glass past the window seals - not good.

Do NOT leave the key in the ignition before removing the battery - that will LOCK the key there until the battery is back in!

EXPECT some re-learning by the computer after the battery removal / reinstallation, about things like (a) clock time and (b) the ideal air/fuel ratios for your typical driving, as it loses all this kind of stuff when the battery is removed.

Instructions per Jim G.

10mm, 13mm & 5/16 should do. Remove the cover that faces the rear. Loosten, but not remove 2 ea 10mm bolts on each side so that the battery box will slide in the grooves. Lift up and slide the whole bottom of the box to the rear and lower down the slots. Remove the 13mm bolt and hold-down block. Then remove the cables. Tape them if necessary.

If possible, lower the driver door window before hand. If NOT possible, leave the door "ajar". It will mean something to you if you have to re-index the windows so as not to break them by slamming the door shut with the door glass in the "up" position. If they are UP, you will have to re index them to work properly BEFORE you close the door.
