Signature #15: “Taj Mahal Music Tour SSR”

Signature #15 – Pedigree Theme: “Taj Mahal Music Tour SSR”
One of three Music Tour SSRs – each touring with a different musical artist or group during the summer of 2003 on tour with a specific when they performed at outdoor concert venues around the U.S. The tours not only gave concertgoers the chance to enjoy a variety of great music, they also gave many of them their first look at the all-new Chevrolet SSR.

SSR #15 toured with Taj Mahal. A self-taught musician, Taj Mahal plays more than 20 instruments – including the National Steel and Dobro guitars, and his remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry. His music is a well-seasoned gumbo, spiced with influences that originate in the Carribbean, West Africa, the Southern states and the inner cities of America. After earning his degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1964, Taj co-founded the Rising Suns. This led to a recording contract for Taj, who quickly rost to prominence with his first solo albums, Taj Mahal (1968), The Natch’l Blues (1968), and Giant Step (1969). Over the years Taj has toured with many of the world’s great blues, rock, and reggae artists. Ask anyone who knows him and they’ll tell you: Taj is a family man. They’re referring to the family of great African American musical traditions – blues, folk, reggae, R&B, zydeco, gospel and jazz – all of which define the very character of a music in this country.

Memorabilia items that Taj Mahal provided for the SSR Signature Series #15 pedigree include autographed CDs, a Taj Mahal baseball cap, plus several autographed T-shirts and tank tops.
Editors note: Thanks to Bob Walczyk, Chevrolet Portfolio Manager, for providing the details above that appear in Signature #15's scrapbook.
