Black wheels and tire combo question

Hello all,
Just wore out my original Goodyears after 17500 miles. Fronts had expose cords on the inside. Bad. Figured it'd be a good time to swap out both wheels and tires. Never liked the chrome stock wheels. Thinking the more current black look. I've read the threads and think I'm going with the Nitto Invo tires. May opt to go with 20s all around, or 22 back and 20 front (only if I'm dumping the stock wheels).
Has anyone done this? Any thoughts on an affordable set of black wheels that are clean, and not gawdy? Pics? I have a yellow 2005 SSR.
Also, is there any market for my stock chrome wheels with only 17k on them? What would you guys expect to be a quick sale price on these wheels.
Thanks for your help.
I love this forum!
Dave

I had my stock wheels powder coat painted black on my silver & black 05.
Search for "Hail Damage" and look at post # 39.

Thanks SSR051.
Your car looks sharp. I may need to consider the black. I was also thinking of black with some slingshot yellow highlights or stripes of some sort.
I'm in Mooresville, NC, NASCAR land, so I need something to make it pop from stock

I did the 20" front and back a couple of years ago, did'nt like it. The 20's on the front are tight, and on the rear I went with the same size tire as the front so I could rotate them and the rear tires looked too narrow, did'nt fill up the fender well.

Black sounds like a mega- idea, Dave . . .

A couple years ago I had a set of OEM Satin Wheels painted Slingshot Yellow just for kicks and the compliments have never ended.

Even though I kept the OEM Chrome Wheels, I doubt seriously if they'll ever be reinstalled as I grown to like the Slingshots much more.

Pictures?

That sounds cool. That thought entered my mind also, and it would be cheaper than a whole new set of wheels (I think). Do you think I could get the chrome powder coated in that exact color? Any idea of the cost?
Love to see any pics you may have.
Thanks,
Dave

I checked into both Paint and Powder Coat, Dave.

The owner of the Powder Coating Company here in Tucson was a little "iffy" on the color matching the paint which is literally inches away so I chose paint. Also, the cost estimate for Powder Coating was many times higher and, at that time, I just wasn't too sure I would be happy with the Yellows.

I wouldn't recommend having the Chromes painted since you should be able to pick up a set of Satins for a fraction of the price of Chromes.

Pictures? Not a problem. The Doophus has plenty . . .

Thanks, Dave . . . they definitely attract lots of attention.

Did you catch the seat hoops and the other interior parts?

By the way, LOTS CHEAPER than your plan.

I really like those too, but they look pretty expensive. What size are those wheels?

Paint the inside of the wheels flat black and they will really stick out!!

The yellow wheels look great. I have done that with my Miata using a polished lip and the result was even more striking. I know that is not possible with the SSR standard wheels but the yellow alone looks great on your wheels. A little tire prep...not too glossy would make them pop. The idea of painting the inside non glossy black is also a good idea as stated in the last reply. Your interior treatments are nice as well.
However...pigs don't fly and they are not yellow!

Cord Showing

Same thing happened to me at about the same mileage.

Get an alignment, The factory alignment will scrub the inside edge to the cord long before you see the wear on the rest of the tire.

At the time, Mike and Killerbee . . . painting the insides black was considered.

Dust In The Desert is a real BOOGER and it was primarily "poo-poo'd" since I am the chief, and only, "detailer" for The Doophus. I figured the original brushed aluminum would stay cleaner and look better longer.

DOOPHUS,
I remember when we first meet up at the AZ Tech Session many moon ago and those yellow wheels look great.

I been meaning to ask you if the painter clear coated the wheels too?

I know you're not going to do it but as for this non glossy black talk, IMHO, I think medium gray would be better. Just don't do it as it wouldn't look right each time you get the wheels re-balance.

That is David. "Darc_vexiS" is his screen name, I think. He also taped the stripe himself. He did a thread on it a few years back.

Yes, Jeff . . . a couple coats of paint and then a couple coats of clear coat.

The painter assured me the finish should hold up to just about anything other than curbs and car washes. Since I'm very careful with curbs and The Doophus has never been subjected to a car wash . . . things are still "lookin good" after all this time.

FINGERS and TOES ARE CROSSED.

no car washes? dang. oh bruno here is kind of lazy sometimes and we have a pretty good class drive thru (pull thru) wash in town that does lots of high end cars. I've never had a problem. Do you think that abrasion would be too much on the yellow paint when they hit the tracks or tire scrubbers?
Also, did you mount your tires after the yellow paint, or before? I'm concerned about the tire mounting or balancing machines scratching it.

Dave
Good questions, Dave . . .

Not certain the "no car washes" comment should be taken literally because he was already aware The Doophus had never visited one anyway. I have a feeling the brushless types should be ok as the painted finish is as durable as the finish on the body or even chrome wheels.

However, I definitely would not clean them with stiff brushes, scouring pads or abrasive cleansers any more than I would use that stuff on the painted surfaces.

The "no curbs" comment would apply to any wheel on any vehicle.

As for installation . . . the local Discount Tire Shop switched the tires from the chrome wheels AFTER the painting using the regular mounting and balancing system for about 20 bucks each.

No car wash for me either. I'll hire one of those mobile car wash guys that come to my place. They'll do a better job 'cause they want your repeated service.

I have a nice set of sterling silver original painted wheels that I would be willing to trade for your chrome wheels and would pay some reasonable difference. my wheels have some very minor scratches which would not show if sanded and repainted. I live in the jacksonville FL area. Please call me @ 904 264 9649 if interested. GM JIM
