Thumbs down Warning-General Grabber UPH tire blow out

On my way home from Florida yesterday, my left rear tire blew out. I stopped the vehicle safely and called a rollback and he took me to a tire dealer. We don't know why it blew. There were no punctures or cuts in the thread area. The sidewall was blown out in several places. I got another set of tires and went on my way. Arrived home safe.
Anyway the tire was 3 years old, had about 25,000 miles on it and had about 1/2 thread. I checked the air pressure about 1 month ago and it was fine. The tire was a General Grabber UPH 295/45/R20. I purchased all 4 at the same time and the other 3 are OK.
Did anyone else have a problem with this tire or does anyone know why it blew out? Thanks, Walter

Also 2 people that I would like to thank:

Jeff's Wrecker Service, Rocky Mount NC
&
Jim at Carolina Tire in Rocky Mount, NC

Both of these gentlemen went out of their way to get me going. If you can ever give them some business, I would appreciate it.

Not what you want to hear but it looks like a run flat to me.

It's always a good idea to check tire pressure before any road trip. With the low profile tires on the SSR it's hard to eyeball low pressure until it's done to near nothing. Rolling down the highway the tire generates heat from friction with the road and flexing as it rolls. Low pressure means more flexing and more heat. If you get hot enough, the rubber starts to soften and debond which allows more flex and heat... Finally the rubber comes apart far enough to let the air out and you get a 'blowout'.

I have Grabbers all around also. And with Dayton tru knock off spoke wheels, which can start a slow leak at anyone of the 540 spokes, I have to check air all the time.

Installed the Grabbers on the '03 and still happy with them. Put a new set on the '05 and at least two were out of round in the first thousand miles. Replaced all four while out west with the Nittos and think they are a much better choice. No more Grabbers purchased here especially after reading about Tiny's experience.

Dot#

If you will check the dot number on the tires.I ordered my first set of Grabbers and they were 5 years old. I told them no way and left.Went to Discount tire and told them no older than 6 mo old or I wouldn't accept them. They got me new ones within 6 mo old. You could have a old set when you bought them.So check the dot no. and let the rest of us Grabber guys Know. I really like the grabbers and will buy another set unless yours were new when you bought them and blew out after only 3 yrs. Thanks

I do not know the manufacture date. I had to leave both rear tires at the dealer. I didn't have any room to take them. They couldn't find me any tires to match the size that I needed. I purchased 2 used 20" matched set of tires to get me home. It worked and we are home.
I am going to get 4 new tires. I will definately check the manufacture date.
I don't know what brand I am going to get.
It's a lonely feeling stuck on the interstate, 5:00pm, 500 miles from home, flat tire and no spare.
I got lucky this time and was on my way in only 3 1/2 hours.

Walt, check the dates on the fronts, just for the hell of it. They probably differed from the rears, but it would be interesting to know if they were new when you bought them.
Glad you made it safe.

I have grabbers all around, last month blew a front,a large bolt came threw it. Discount tire exchanged for $71.00, don't know the age of the tire but they have less than 500 miles, I like the tires, ride good and also have stiff plate and lc32 crossover with the generals a good ride. george

hi,,i to got 4 new grabbers from tire rack under 8 mo. old, last nov. drove to detroit for the t-day game from fl. and back. they are so much better then the goodyears. i had to add about 5 lbs. of air after about 5 days which is nomal. the person at tire rack said all there tires are under a year old because they turn them over so fast..i do not know if that is true, also he said this tire tread design is under a year as of the time i got them..again i do not know if this is true. but i like them and have about 5000 miles on them.

Glad you made it safe.
The fronts were made in 25/09, which is in June, 2009. I purchased them on
9/16/2009. That would make them fresh tires. I put 26,000 miles on them.
I don't know if the backs were the same date.
While checking the tires, I seen--MADE IN PORTUGAL--on them.

BUMMER, Walter . . . it's getting tougher and tougher to buy American.

I would have never purchased Grabbers if I had known.

Probably on the inside along with the made date. That's where they put everything they don't want you to see.
