Garage space for my 05 is really tight & the only option is to back it in each night. Has anyone recently did a back up camera install??

Pretty easy install, just the problem of running the wires up to your console.
.
Tap into the wires going to your back-up lights, that gives you 12 volts. and only activates when you go in reverse.
.
run all the wires up front, being careful to stay away from mufflers and tail pipes.
.
Theres a small hole on the passenger side that will allow you to run wires into the cabin, then under the seat and to the console where you mount the screen.
Nice afternoon project, GOOD LUCK

When installing the new head unit look at the tutorial on how to remove the airbag, that is the big obstacle. Once you remove it and eliminate two of the screws as shown future work will be easier as well. I had to do this twice as I was not happy with the first head unit (Sony) I got from Crutchfield (could not turn off monitor and still have audio), having the screws removed from the airbag helped ALOT on the second install.

Use a CRUX adaptor to utilize the steering wheel controls. I use JVC i all of my rides as several models they have allow you to turn off the screen when driving at night but still have audio. I let a simple Garmin do my GPS when and if needed.

I mounted my camera above the plate, ran wires along passenger side of frame into the above mentioned access under passenger floor. Unit shown in picture was the first one (Sony), has since been replaced with the JVC. The camera I used also has a backup sensor but only works when I am real close to something.

I bought and installed the Autovox CAM-6 and highly recommend it. Beautiful bright and sharp picture, low profile and discreetly placed camera. Wired it up just like oldfred says in post #2. Here is the link to my install post:

If you do not replace your head unit then, yes, you will need to by a monitor to use with the camera, but there are very good options available out there.

I have a back up cam I installed as part of my head unit upgrade. Make sure you get a CMOS camera. They work in low light, much better picture quality then the cheaper cameras with built in IR lights.
I needed something on the front as I pull my SSR in nose first to the garage.
I bought a electromagnetic parking sensor kit which does not require drilling any holes in the number. The sensor has a metallic tape that mounts behind the bumper or in my case I mounted it inside the back of the grill bar. I powered it off the brake switch so it is only active with foot on the brake and also installed a switch on the dash to kill it if in traffic. It works great, starts beeping at about 36" and goes to continuous tone at about 15". Very easy to install, took me about two hours+\-. Got the kit on EBay for about $14.00.

In the garage wouldn't tire stops have been easier? Or the rubber ball on a string and you stop when it touches the windshield? It's a cool gadget, but does really help when you're out and about?

I've got two tennis balls and a fishing cork(red and white bobber) it works, and is not very high on the list to change to a matching tennis ball. However, it would look much better.
Well the :ssr and jeep match. She has the bobber, maybe I should get around to it, she does drive the Audi.:wink2:

Now back to backup cameras.
