Backup Lights -Mods to reduce size?

I've seen several mods here and there over the last 6 months or so, but now I'm having trouble finding pictures of those mods. A search did not turn up any results. I'd like to reduce the size of the back up lights. I've seen a flames version, that I don't care for. Wondering if anyone has an overlay that reduces the visual size of the backup lights. I'm thinking a round opening in a black surround.
Thanks.

I just went on the internet and looked for corvette rear license covers/grilles and they have many including colors, carbon fiber, chrome etc. but not like you describe. Might take a look at them. Some cover the back up lights with a grille design. They have the same design as our SSR license and back up lights set up.

I didn't realize our backup light/license plate assembly was a corvette part. Good to know. I can experiment and if I mess it up, I can get a replacement.

The round one is what I remember seeing.

I'll check out eBay.

Thanks!

Rear plate/reverse light frame... What color?

I have the "window shade" in black, but it also comes in body colors

I bought and installed the louvered license plate frame that Auggie Doggie suggested. Good product but it didn't quite diminish the backup lights to the extent I was looking for.

So I bought a smoked license plate/backup light assembly off eBay. I never understood smoked head lights and tail lights, why make it harder to see you? But for the backup lights, I decided to give it a shot.

As you can see in the pictures, you do get a bit of "clear" coming through, this is the external light bouncing off the internal reflectors in the back up lights.

The brightness is diminished somewhat, can't say how much, but for me, the purpose of the backup lights is to inform other drivers and pedestrians that I am backing up.

The next step may be to paint over the backup lights (body color) and install some backup lights elsewhere. Picture 5 is an SSR in Europe, I believe the lights are yellow turn signals not backup lights, but I like the look and placement. Afraid to drill into the rear facia, no turning back after that.

I think you are correct, in part, when you state the purpose of the backup lights. I think you missed the part where the backup lights are supposed to help you see what is behind you when you are backing up, be it people or animals or trash cans or curb. If you cannot see them then you are likely as not to hit them and damage your vehicle, whatever it may be. When backing into a dark garage I find the brighter the better. I know I could head in and not have to worry about it, but then I would have to back out into the alley and not be able to see the cross traffic before it gets to me.
To each his own I guess.

They are headlights for going backwards, the brighter the better.

One thing I would suggest, if you are reducing the amount of backup light exposed, is to switch your backup bulbs to LED bulbs. Much brighter and will still give you good visibility when backing up.

The brightness is not reduced much, which is why I said I can't say by how much. So far, owned the SSR for a year, never been out after dark.

nowandthen: another option is to buy a piece of the bronze tail light tint sold on ebay and just use it to cover the backup lens. It works very well.

In addition of LEDs add this Corvette license plate frame and you'll be all set. Comes in colors and chrome and fits like it belongs, 'cause it does. I have it on mine, but I can't get through the snow to get to the garage right now.

I tried that and I liked it. But for me, I wanted to diminish the "overpowering" back up lights (my personal opinion), especially on a black R with a black license plate. I have that frame black. If someone wants it, PM me.

The license plate frame is sold.

Dr Who hit the nail on the head, and xoxobruce and Blue Steak should be pleased.

The LEDs are so bright you wouldn't know the lenses were smoked.

1. Smoked lenses, backup lights off.
2. Smoked lenses, backup lights on, stock light bulbs.
3. Smoked lenses, backup lights on, one stock light bulb, one LED bulb.
4. Smoked lenses, backup lights on, both LED bulbs.

I have another idea, but it will be 3-4 weeks before I can share.

If you don't drive at night then it doesn't much matter if you can see what's behind you. As far as warning pedestrians and other drivers in the day time, it's whatever warning you're willing to share with them. Just tell the judge hey, my back up lights were on. You also might be interestsd in this. or this.

Smoked lense, Corvette frame + LEDs should do your trick.

First of all, the louvered license plate frame is sold.

The final mod I made to the smoked back up lights was to apply some black electrical tape to the bottom inside of the reflectors. This prevents the "ghost" image when viewing the backup lights in the daytime, sun shining on the lenses.

I now have blacked out backup lights and with the brighter LED bulbs, i get good illumination through the smoked lenses.

First picture, before blacking out lower portion of reflector.
Second picture, after blacking out lower portion of reflector.
