Big Boy locomotive and the 150th Golden Spike anniversary

I was reading a previous post about model trains and a link to SSR's and it was realized that we have a few railfans in the family. In that thread I incorrectly stated a time and place about the Big Boy locomotive that is being restored. I just happen to be passing through Cheyenne Wy tonight and saw the story about the loco on the news. Today May 10th is the 149th anniversary of the golden spike ceremony in Ogden Utah. Union Pacific is restoring a Big Boy here in Cheyenne and plan to run it to Ogden next year to celebrate the 150th anniversary. So I think that the wife and I will surely try to come back to see the event and wonder if we could organize an informal get together with other R family members that would be interested to watch this historic event. I know it's a year away but I'd like to see if there is any interest from others.

(MODERATOR NOTE: Official info thread for BIGBOY RUN, Ogden, Utah)

Rope
Rope,
If you can get any preliminary information about what might be in the works for this event, train wise, that could be very helpful. Considering the number of railfans that were chasing the Big Boy out of So Cal when it left for Cheyenne, I am sure this will be a very large event and the planning on our part might need to take place early on. Date of the actual event and how much is really planned would be helpful. I am interested from both the rail and SSR point pof view.

OH BOY,BIG BOY, What a great get together for this great event next year. The weather would probably be good In OGDEN In may. This could be a great get together with other Fanatics from all over. Being a model railroader all my life I would be thrilled to be there. Hopefully we will get more Information from ROPE. Cheers

Thanks for the information. I will be planning to be there. Figure an overnight in Las Vegas then on to Ogden for the festivities then back to Vegas for an overnight and home again. Need to find the right Motel/hotel for SSRs in Ogden.

Why don’t you look over the schedule and let me know what days your thinking then I’ll start checking into lodging and see if I can get a group rate setup somewhere. Also I’ve got a great steakhouse in Evanston, WY which is about an hour from Ogden that we could setup a dinner cruise to if everyone wants to.

For those not familiar with the Big Boy locomotives here is a pic of my late brothers H/O scale version. The one with the pen in front of it. I was going to provide a link for info to look at but there are so many I just figured anyone interested could google it, there are you tube videos available too.

What makes you think I can afford such an extravagance? I live in CA and can barely afford the gasoline to drive to Utah.

I have added a picture of the 4014 Big Boy being moved through the Cajon Pass on it's way to Wyoming for rebuild. This should show the size of this piece of machinery.

Guys I just wanted to put in my two cents worth, I was up to Promontory Point point few years ago. It is out in the middle of nowhere from Tremonton, Ut. It is 36 miles. From Interstate 84 it is 22 miles.

From Ogden, Ut. It is 61 miles around a hour drive.

I live approximately 4 miles directly west of this motel. However as soon as I get some approximate dates people are thinking I was going to check with a couple of hotels in downtown Ogden that are within walking distance to the Union Station.

I am thinking about arrival on May 9 and departure on May 12 unless there are other events added.
With two days travel each way that will pretty much shoot a week.

BlueStreak, just tell them who you are and the SSR Nation you represent, and they'll probably load your truck on a flatcar directly behind Big Boy for grand entrance.

Wide open country up there, just rolled thru there on the way back from Yellowstone. Thing is I'm going for the train more than anything and the area is quite different than where I live so variety is good. Enjoyed the pics of the restored Jupiter, I have an N scale version of it. My current plan is to track the 4014 from Cheyenne to Ogden, from the local news cast I saw in Cheyenne they are planning to take their time getting there with a few stops and events along the way. Have to wait until their timeline is posted before making reservations.

This looks like a good place for a small rally. I know there are a lot of ferroequinologists out there that would like to see 4014. We would come up from Az. Maybe we could get MagicCarpetRide to join and we could get a trainload of PacBlues. .02
