Are there any groups available with “hired drivers”

Just a question for those going to this incredible event .... being alone, I think it best I find a tour group or gathering to join to view this GREAT RALLY OF TRAIN BUFFS, rather than driving by myself with my knee on the wheel while my hands are tightly gripping my camera (s) .... daring to see it all ! I watched thousands of fans as they followed the Challenger run up the Keddie Wye out of Sacramento Rail Fair in ‘99. The roads were plugged with vehicles carelessly parked along the shoulders of the 2-lane road creating huge gridlock and flaring tempers.... (I was on the train). If anyone knows of groups planning drivers and busses, please let me know. I would be most grateful ..... I'd hate to leave this world without seeing this event!

Thank you,
Sue Campbell

Hired drivers

I haven't heard of anyone arranging this type of thing yet. I myself will hopefully be watching it roll by from good vantage points along the way from Cheyenne to Ogden, parked off the road. Sounds like you could possibly have some chance for inside info about its journey. If you could post anything you might find out it would be very valuable info for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the loco.

The info is starting to roll in about Big Boy on their steam club site, http://up.com/SteamClub , new videos posted just today. They did a critical pressure test today and had no issues. The latest travel schedule will be posted to that site soon they say so for those wanting to try and see the loco in route from Cheyenne to Ogden that will be your best source. We're hoping to chase it as much as possible. I've been reading info about the history of the Transcontinental railroads construction, Wikipedia has a good page with lots of links for related info too. I spent hours yesterday reading all the fascinating info. Good way to pass a winters day. Sure looking forward to May, it will be here soon!

Chase

So with the few opportunities to chase 4014 I'm wondering if anyone else has similar plans as myself. We plan to chase the day it leaves Cheyenne, the 4th, and then to chase the day it rolls into Ogden, the 8th. Anyone else doing the same?

I’m considering a chase after the event...... on the way back when booth locomotives will be traveling together.

Good idea, those days offer more viewing than the trip from Cheyenne. We will be chasing that Sunday from Ogden to Evanston. Seeing the two locos together will be amazing and historical.

The train schedule (posted in this thread) indicates that the two locomotives will be “double headed” on the way back to Cheyenne. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity that I won’t want to miss.

The stop in Evanston is an overnight, with departure at 08:00 on Monday. The next overnight stop is in Rock Springs. That is only an hour and a half drive from Evanston, but there are a couple train stops along the way.

Debbie and I are booking Sunday night in Evanston..... cuz we can..... and planning to have lunch on Monday in Rock Springs. Looks like a great way to spend a little time in some small railroad towns.

I’m excited.........

For the railfans

So we're in Eureka Springs Arkansas for a few days of bike riding, one of our favorite areas is here and southern Missouri which are awesome twisty roads that will be great for all attending the event in Branson later this year. And I thought I would post some pics of the equipment at the train station in Eureka Springs. The 1951 Chevy wagon has always been my favorite here. A 2-6-0 locomotive, and an old turntable is cool. Just trying to whet the appetite of the railfans attending the Bigboy event in a couple of weeks. Cya there!

I think it said 25,000 gallons on the back end of the engine.
If you look at 13:00 or 20:30 then imagine what a busy railyard like Chicago or Pittsburgh must have been like with a dozen or so of the steam coal burners working. Even the yard donkeys burned coal.

Often wrong...... but never in doubt.

I have a few pics I'm looking forward to posting when I get back home to the computer. Got the best ones today in Echo Valley after they left Ogden. Was a memorable experience seeing these locomotives over the past few days.
