BORN TO RUN - 2019 travels of our RED

SEE THE USA IN YOUR CREVROLET...SSR THAT IS! WE have great travel plans for us and little red , as long as we and red stay healthy!
We left home on Tues. 29 Jan. , went to St. Louis for DR. appointment on Wed. , got OK from DR. so we were off! Made it to Memphis for a good night's sleep. Thursday made it to Dothan , Al , farther than we wanted to go - but had trouble finding a room around Montgomery-popular place apparently??
Today we are headed for Florida and MAYBE we will get far enough to make the car show in Coral Springs on Sat. We will see what the road holds.
So FLORIDA FANATICS beware , we are coming to your area and would like to meet you if we get to your town. We are planning to go down the East coast all the way to the Keys , then go up the West coast on our way to meet some other COLD weather Fanatics in Orange Beach AL on the 14th of Feb.
Looking forward to seeing/meeting everyone , I will try to keep up with our travels here. SSReplay RED IS BORN TO RUN!!

I know you are going to have a great time. The group in FL are a FUN bunch and once they discover this thread they will be looking for your next stop.
I have made a few of these adventures but usually have tried to have a target a couple days ahead so I know where I am sleeping, and when.
Be careful, in the current weather plans can be upset easily. Please keep this thread alive so we all know where you are.

Be sure to let us know if/when you might be coming through Ohio.

I realize the Florida coast is nowhere near Ohio, but I'm sure Ohio fanatics would meet-n-greet if you were here.

This may be short as we got to Stuart,Fl late and need to be in Coral Springs by 11:30 tomorrow. This wouldn't be a problem for Robert since he is up before the sun but I am not that much of a morning person!
We drove about 485 miles today - not that far but the traffic was bad on I-10 . The biggest surprise we saw was the damage done by the hurricane last fall , the clean-up will be going on for a long time! The amount of trees uprooted and snapped off 15 - 20 feet off the ground was such a sad sight , this was the cause of our biggest delay as the crews were trying to clean up the shoulders and median--they have just begun! We just took a couple of pictures and left my how-to cheat-sheet at home so will have to get to a computer / printer to load pictures---maybe tomorrow after we get back from the car show. Good Night ALL -- we will see you down the road.

Don't you all miss puttin' in 20 hours everyday in your RePlay Sports Bar ???> I can't imagine selling a Family owned business to travel around the country in an SSR, especially a Redline Red one Cardinal Baseball will be here soon, so get your travelin' in now !!! I think "the Birds on the Bat" have 6 games this year on Wednesday that start ar 12:15. I don't know why I didn't introduce you to Rogers Hornsby's Grandson, who is one of my neighbors. He was the greatest Cardinal player before Stan Musial. Brad (Hornsby) has some nice memorabelia in his law office downtown including a Silver Bat his Grand Father got for winning the Batting title one year. His Grand father's first name (Rogers) is Rogers mothers maiden name.

Hey, Jim & Lois ... SAFE travels !!!

Spending our second night in Port St. Lucie after two wonderful days of fun activities with the Florida gang.
Saturday we made it to al's car show at Coral Springs and was definitely the least clean - some would say dirty - car there! We looked for a car wash all the way there from the hotel and didn't find one so we gave up and let everyone see what 1250 miles of road scum looks like! Had a fun time with everyone , had a good meal and the Lord provided me with a natural car wash -- it helped but needed soap! (did rinse off the road salt underneath though!) Went to Book & Lin's house for R&R and checked out Book's handiwork inside and out (wish I lived closer, he does nice work!) Spent the rest of the evening just talking and catching up.
Today got up for breakfast with 8-10 other SSR's at Golden Coral , Good food and since Dictator and Chuckster were there we had ICE CREAM for dessert!
After breakfast , went to Ft. Pierce Winery show & shine with 18-20 SSR's for the public to admire (still haven't got Red washed , but did wash the windshield) This was a nice place for a show , with live music and of course some wine and a good crowd to enjoy both. We had a couple newbies show up and a lot of interest from the general public , all in all a very nice event that we hope to do again.
Topped the day off with the gang at Pete & Linda's to watch the Super Bowl. I think Linda spent too much time preparing the table of snacks for us but everything was great , loved the Chili , and I think the brownies Lin made were good but I can't say for sure cause Book kept taking them and telling everyone else they were bad for us LOL.
The game was OK but the company was GREAT and we enjoyed this Super Bowl more than any in recent memory because of those we got to watch it with!!
I can't Thank Book & Lin and Pete & Linda enough for your hospitality and friendship. Thanks for inviting us to share the last couple days with you , we hope we can return the favor someday . So if next winter you get tired of being warm , and want to freeze your a-- off, you know your welcome in Illinois! he he! Seriously thanks again - see you in Maggie!
Tomorrow it's off to the south of Florida - how far - who knows? good night all

Must turn around

Hello all , NO we are not ending our trip , we just made it to Key West and the road and the USA doesn't go any farther south! Since neither me or RED knows how to swim , we are heading north with a few western detours.
Sorry for the lag in posts , but having computer problems , had a nice long post typed in and lost everything a couple times so this is short and will try to do a few short entries to see if I can get them to post before my "almost a computer" gets tired!!

Monday

Left Port St Lucie and stopped at Jupiter to check out the Cardinals Spring Training site and the changes since our last visit - lots of them - Built a new Marriot across the street and more Condos where everyone used to park , now I guess you get to walk from the college parking lot. Also stopped to see the new Ballpark at the Beaches which is where the Astros and Nationals play - Looks very nice. The side effect of the new park is the Holliday Inn a few blocks away that we used to stay at doubled in price!
The drive to Miami area on I 95 was shall we say less than enjoyable.

Tuesday

We decided that we would take the back roads to continue since US 1 is the only road to the Keys and goes by the Coral Castle , good choice , the drive was much more enjoyable - top down . The Coral Castle was worth the time we spent , if you have never heard of it , Google it the story is very interesting and thought provoking.
Continued down US 1 to the Southern tip of the USA to watch a sunset and then spend an evening exploring Old Key West. Had a great meal and enjoyed the night life.
Gas is only about a dime higher out here which surprised me , but they made up for it at the hotel , Crown Plaza is about 300 / night.
Big day of sightseeing planned so must get going. See you all down the road!!

Wednesday

Lots of walking today , Key West Downtown has a lot to see and do. We caught a pedal cab to Market Square to check out the shops and the docks used for commercial tie ups. There was a rather large cruise ship docked today - Brilliance of the Seas - does that ring a bell with anyone?
Close by is Mel Fisher's Museum which details his discovery of a Spanish treasure ship that sunk close to Key West in the 1600's --- so far they have recovered over 400 million dollars worth of treasure. Just some of the loot is on display but still worth a look to see the gold, silver, jewels and artifacts
Just a few blocks away is the Truman Winter White House. If you are a history buff or a fan of Harry Truman this is a must see. Not as impressive as the real White House , it reflects the common personality of the man who enjoyed the simple life and slower pace of the area.
Drove off the Keys to the mainland tonight . Planning to catch up on washing and sleep tomorrow.

SSR sightings on the Keys

Almost forgot
Tues. going to Key West at about mile 60 we met a Slingshot Yellow running topless . Then today - Wed. as we left Key West ,we met a Pac Blue running with the top up at about mile 14 . If either of these were you , sorry we didn't wave , with the traffic you were gone before we could say Hi !

Thursday

Hi Gang,
We slept in today and did laundry(yes even on a road trip you have to do laundry) Feels good to catch up on sleep and cut back on activities.
Left the Miami area and took 41 thru the Everglades , the wife wanted to see alligators in the wild - NO PROBLEM! We saw several of all sizes along the road bank just sunning themselves , looked almost fake until you got their attention or some other tasty morsel came in range. Had a great time watching the wildlife and learning a little at the Park Service Visitors center.
Tomorrow we plan on taking it easy and visit some friends in the Cape Coral area , he has been building a hot rod for a couple years between taking several cruises each year so I will be interested to see his progress.
Friday we plan to head Dictator's way and maybe talk him into some ice cream!
SEE Y'ALL DOWN THE ROAD! (a little southern lingo there)

Yes, if there is none of that white stuff on the ground (you do remember what that is don't you). Going to meet up with Mic and Donna somewhere Thursday morning and come on down. Probably mid day.

Friday

Slight change of plans today . Our friends had a death in their "family" overnight so we decided to let them take care of the issues they needed to take care of without our interference .
This gave us a day to explore the area. We decided to check out the Ft. Meyers Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter estates. Edison spent a lot of time here and had a lab and botanical gardens for plant research. He invited Ford here for vacation and a few years later Ford bought the house next door, unfortunately he would only get there for a short time every year around Edison's birthday. After Edison's death, Ford had the small office / lab moved to Greenfield Village in Michigan for display, but had a replica built in its place . The grounds are beautiful and of course history is everywhere, it's pricey ($25 / person) but worth it to spend time getting a close up inside view of the life of two of the most important people in history.
Tomorrow we head to the land of Dictator! See you down the road.

Saturday

Hi gang,
Today was my sweet wife's birthday, so we celebrated it like any good SSR owners, by spending time with Dictator and Kathy. They welcomed us into their home where we spent the afternoon enjoying ourselves with some relaxing conservation. Topped the day off with a great meal at their local Olive Garden (where we witnessed one of the largest waiter tray dumps I've seen--no one was hurt or spilled on) and had a good ride in Kathy's new car that seemed to be rodent free (ask her to explain the next time you see her). We ended our visit with a quick tour of the house (we loved both the house and neighborhood) and before our goodbye's Dick gave Lois a birthday present -- a set of carbon fiber door handle 3M covers and SSRfanatic decals for both SSRs.
As Fanatics this was a special way to spend Lois's birthday. The opportunity to spend a day with Dick & Kathy was I am sure more fun for us than them but I think they enjoyed themselves also. Thanks again to both of them for a wonderful visit.
Sunday will be spent in the Tarpon Springs area visiting with friends from back home. See Ya Down The Road!!
