Hey, Jim and Lois. Did I read somewhere that you're coming to Bowling Green for the tri-five in August?

GREAT, I know you will enjoy it, we will keep it touch as it gets closer. Don't know if our 55 will be ready but just got a call from our interior guy and they (3 of them) are working hard on it finally!

Thursday June 13th

Left Quincy for the second time about 2:30 this afternoon, second time because we made it to Iowa the first time and when we saw our first cop running radar it for some reason reminded us both that we had neglected to put the new 2020 license plate sticker on Red. The current one expires June 30th so it's good for now but we don't expect to be home by then - so back we went to get the postage stamp size sticker that no one will notice if it is current, but we don't want to give the law a reason to look more closely than they already are. We made it to Des Moines tonight and are staying at the same Hotel MicDonna, SwtRyd, and us stayed at on the way to Ogden. Not much to see on the way, did notice all the farmers are way behind, but the rain must have slacked up earlier from around Pella on north - lots more planted and even saw one field of beans up. Still lots of flooding around Quincy but the river is down about 3ft.
Time for bed - going to try to make it to Rapid City tomorrow to see a High School friend. down the road

EDIT:
added some pictures of the flood waters - pics 1-3 picture 4 was along the way after we got to higher ground.

Friday June 14

We left Des Moines and headed for Rapid City, longer trip than we normally like for one day but we thought that it was going to be a bit boring and wanted to get it out of the way. Also have made a date with a classmate from high school to meet for supper tomorrow evening so we got to get on our way. started to sprinkle as we loaded our luggage but no serious rain till later in the day. Since we are going to be touring far from civilization and cell phone coverage I wanted a little insurance that help could be summoned if I needed it. After a little research I settled on a Satellite Messenger . It runs off a satellite system and guarantees global coverage - for a nominal fee - you can only text message, not call, but it is a fraction of the cost and if it's needed that will be sufficient. Couldn't find one in stock in Quincy of course, so stopped at a Bass Pro Shop in Iowa to get one - impressive store!
Back on the road thru Iowa and they have the same wet conditions as around Quincy, farmers just now getting in the fields. Only slight exception was an area around Pella that had dried out a little sooner and had a fair amount of corn up and even saw one field of beans. Rest of Iowa and South Dakota are as far behind as the rest of the Midwest.

Pic 3 Some uncovered corn waiting for shipping - It looked like rain!
Pic 4 corn up and tall grass waving in the wind.
Pic 5 Something else growing in the countryside.

Saturday June 15

We made it to Rapid City Yesterday and stayed out to late catching up with my classmate, slept late, so decided to spend the rest of the day around here. Plenty to see and started out going to Mt. Rushmore, It's been 44 years since our last visit so a little has changed at the site. Our government has seen fit to try to fix what wasn't broken and spent a small fortune trying to make the area around the monument an attraction instead of the monument alone. In the process they ruined the best viewing site and made the walking approach look like an amusement park main street while blocking the view of Rushmore as you walk to the designated viewing area. It is still worth the trip to see this American Iconic Monument but you won't get the same experience that we did in the past - sad.
Loafed around the rest of the day and took a scenic drive to our overnight destination - Belle Fourche ,SD (the geographical center of the U.S. - If you count Hawaii!) We tried to get together with Auggie Doggie but he was out of town at a Bike gathering, so maybe next time we are in this neck of the woods.
Now it's time for bed! down the road

Sunday June 16

Left our substitute hotel - AmericInn in Belle Fourche, SD before 11 this morning headed to Billings, Montana with points of interest in between. The reason for a sub hotel - the only Holiday Inn was sold out and this was the only acceptable one in the area. Turned out to be a very nice privately owned hotel that compared favorably the Hol. Inn The Breakfast was actually better, would definitely stay there again!
Headed to Devils Tower by way of Hwy. 24/34 and stopped at the oldest operating General Store in South Dakota. In Aladdin(Pop. 15) - in business over 100 years! Cool place, been there, got the T shirt.
Headed for a Close Encounter with Devil's Tower National Monument. Sorry, Jarrod made me do it. Anyway we were both impressed by the beauty, size and uniqueness of this site. A word of caution, if you don't have a park pass it could cost $25 per car to get in the park, probably worth it but you can see it pretty well from outside the entrance for free. Free admittance with the National Parks Pass.
Headed for Billings on I - 90 and noticed we went within 3 miles of the site of the Battle of the Little Big Horn so we had to go. Easy access from the Interstate and again is free with the National Parks Pass and $25 per car without. We enjoyed the small visitor center and of course the actual site of the last stand, but I would probably skip it for $25.
I should note that getting to these sites was half the fun! The scenery in this part of the country is stunning, with each view better than the last. What a Beautiful Country we live in!
Buzzed on down the interstate at a legal 80 mph and got to Billings before dark. Now to bed to rest up for the journey to Glacier Nat. Park, down the road!

Pic 2- New Owner(as of last week) and clerk who has worked there 30 yrs.
