Need help finding console keys

Hi folks,
Thought that if anybody can help me you guys can. I purchased a 2004 ssr recently however the keys for the console were lost I tried calling a dealer to cut some new keys gave him the vin # but they told me that the tumbler and key set was discontinued. So this is where I need some help to find some keys with a new tumbler for the console. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two quick fixes, Pete . . .

1) Any competent Locksmith.

2) Find another SSR and see if that key will work.

I have always lived by the theory that if the Bad Guy wants in, the damage to the locked Console or Glove Compartment would be more expensive than anything I may have inside. Therefore, I have never locked mine.

Good Luck.

See EBay link below. Get the number by looking at the face of your current console lock tumbler. You do not need to replace tumbler.

It is a very simple lock and any lock place can make a key in 5 minutes.

I got my blanks from "Car Locks & Keys". $5.99 for 2.

Would have been great if they had the hitch insert keys too.

I think they are the same blank but the cuts are different. I have two and the keys do not open the wrong hitch but they fit the cylinder.

OK, thanks, they probably have a dozen or two different cuts like ignition keys back in the day. I remember somebody parked a '58 Chevy blocking the ramp so we couldn't load cattle at the Eastern States Exposition grounds. Started asking people walking by if they had a GM car to try their car keys, and #6 was a winner.

What number do you need, I have 2 sets.

You can have them if you can use them.

DITTO---I have 3 Hitches, all keys go in, but only the key that came with the hitch opens it. Soooo-----at least 3 different cuts for sure. Seems like there should be a code number somewhere on the hitch like the console but a locksmith I took one to said no.

Not sure if I understand your last sentence. If you are needing a hitch key, they are a standard Ilco blank available at most key vendors/locksmiths (does not the red plastic top, just standard flat key).

The Ilco key is "close enough", but it's not exact. Since I bought my hitch 2nd hand, it only came with 1 key so I had to have copies made. I can definitely feel resistance putting the copy in vs. the original.

Yeah, but Auggie have you ever sat around jawing with friends and stuck to the subject?
I think paszewczuk got the answer in the third post, so from there on we were entertaining and edumacating him.

I had the same issue with my 2004. Found pre-cut keys on the web at "butlerlocksafenkey" for about $10, took about a week. All you need to provide is the 3 didget lock number (stamped on the lock face). Part # GM15184352.

FWIW (and in case anyone else stumbles across this thread) I bought two new console keys from this seller on eBay for $6.25 each. Gave him the code number (located on the face of the tumbler) and I received them in a few days. They work perfectly.

Cheers,

Rich

I got mine off E-bay with the number off the tumbler assembly.

It was a couple of years ago, but I bet they are still out there.

I am somewhat stunned every time this (console) key topic comes up. I'm assuming it's a real concern for some when the top is down and not so when the top is up and the doors/windows are closed and locked.

In the (top down) scenario, if one (wanting to rip off) the contents of whatever might be in that damn console, I do not think it would be too tough to rip the lid off ..................lock or not.

Be that as it may, if having a "locked" console (floats your boat), be my guest. But when I bought my SSR, about the only "glitch" with the whole truck was the console lock was missing/broke.

No big deal to me, I open/close it by hand. Nothing is in there that could/would upset me too much.

While I want most all of my SSR to be fully functional, a lock for that flimsy console lid is not big on my list.

But you DO need the key and need to lock the console in order to remove the console cover to get to anything mounted underneath

Bingo, locks slow crooks down and keep honest people honest.

Useful or not is personal preference, but there are people who want everything factory and working as designed.

Often wrong...... but never in doubt.
