Someone sent their ABS module to someone for repair and when it came back it was in worse shape than when it left. They sent it to me and it was a total disaster inside. Bent pins, cold globs of solder, poor case sealing, isolated the heat sinks.....
The worst part is that I had to totally dissemble some components to access the underside of the board and it is evident that when the repair person took the cover off they crammed a screwdriver into the side of the case and destroyed a component on the mother board (see image below). It is so bad that I cannot get any number or other information off of it. I have tried and will continue to try and find information on this component to replace it but ......
Does anyone have access to a EBCM (electronic brake control module) internal schematic or possibly an old EBCM laying around that is scrap that I can steal this part off of to repair this board? Hate to trash this for one $5 component that someone goofed up.
This is not a common failure item so sending it to a "repair shop" is not a good alternative as I doubt they have schematics either and no components laying around for repair of this problem.
Looking at the picture in Dicktater's how-to it shows the top side and doesn't seem to have any markings on that piece. The original picture is so small I wouldn't be able to blow it up and read it but should be able to tell if there's writing there.
If the Sun come out for more than 3 minutes I can take mine apart and look.
I'm curious why your picture is labeled "ssr brake"
Ahhhhhhh, you are referring to the RDM, I am referring to the ABS. Thus, I use "brake" in the label for my picture :grin2:
The area I took the picture of is not easily accessed like during the normal resolder repair, I had to desolder many parts, take off the board and flip it to show this area.
Wow! Never usually see that side of the board Mike! You may need to get your hands on another module to do the forensics!
I wonder if the person that repaired that was the same one that butchered my gauge Pod!
Greg
Yeah, I am hoping someone needs an ABS repaired soon so I can get a part number and save it. Owner is still driving his so I cannot wait too long :frown2:
It's a 03-04 but I am sure the small components are the same for all years. I've looked at boards from non traction control (S10) and they do not have that component. :frown2: A water or wreck damaged unit would be perfect for parts, or even a picture would help.
I would contact Dicktator. I know he repairs them. He might have parts or a reconditioned module; if not, he'll give you the guidance you need. After you finalize your repair, protect it with one of Mike's heat shields.
Hey Frank,
I am going to borrow Mikes since it is an 03 but if you want to send it in for repair feel free. I can also compare boards and see if there really is a difference. Do you know what codes it is tossing out or just the normal light on dash? If you are getting a particular message I can replace some board parts that might be the issue or just resolder which corrects most of the issues.
I spent 20 years in the military doing high precision micro miniature solder repairs on aircraft that flew mach 3 and altitudes of 85k and above. I held quite a few certifications and lots of schooling, I still repair phones and other end items to the board level when I can. Sorry to say, I've seen some real "hatchet jobs" from the "pros" as well but thankfully it doesn't happen often.
While I do not have all the specialty equipment to test the ABS as a whole I do have basic equipment that can do a fair amount of testing. I have access to a few components for replacement so no worries taking to the board level for me. I've saved quite a few boo boo repairs others have attempted and failed at, I enjoy the challenge. Can't guarantee repairs but I try my best to save what I can.
This is a very sad case that doesn't happen often but I hope to be able to rectify for the owner.....
