LED Tail light Replacement Bulbs

I installed my NAPA LED LCM about a month ago and just got around to start researching and ordering bulbs. So far I have tail light bulbs, (4) side marker lights, license plate lights and glove box light. I have yet to order the front turn signal and reverse bulbs.

For the tail/turn signal bulbs I ordered them off Ebay from this seller. He has a large choice of high quality bulbs. The are 96 LED SMD 3157 Red Bulbs.

SMD LED LIGHT BULB, LED LIGHT BULB items in dt-autotech store on eBay!

They are as bright if not a touch brighter direct on in bright daylight and much brighter at angle view and at dusk/dark.

Here is showing LED in the left light and stock bulb in right during bright light directly centered between the two just parking lights.

...with brake lights on same way...

...LED shown...

...stock bulb...

I know it is hard to tell but they are brighter, much brighter at night and come on much faster. Here are some more shots from angle and up closer...

Looks great, I know cameras don't capture the LEDs right, they are deep and rich in color when seen on person, but pics don't show that..

Have you tried out your cruise control since the install? Any Issues?

My recommendation for back up LED bulbs

1157 1034 1154 White 24 LED BAY15D Backup Turn Signal Dome Light Bulbs | eBay

I have had these in my Slingshot for a year & they are the brightest that I have seen.

No problems

Slightly more expensive than the '19 LED' version but much brighter & worth the couple of extra bucks

The SMD LED bulbs are much brighter than miniature domed LED's used in those old style bulbs. Plus the SMD style with 60+ LED's give a much better radial output to reflect off the reflector over the bulbs with only rear firing LED's and only a few side shooting pieces.

Yep, I used my Cruise Control all the way to the Keys and back, 8+ hours of driving, and works perfect.

The good thing with using the high count LED bulbs with 90+ count LED's on them is that they still draw a decent amount of current, unlike a LED bulb with only 15-20 1/4 watt LED's on then drawing a max of 5 watts.

For COOL factor or increased light output?

There are some really cool intense LED bulbs but they will not increase output but will look really cool coming down the road, if you want increased light output you will have to go to a 880/893 HID kit.

These are what I am installing in mine...

As usual, Dicktator . . . great "install" pictures.

The Doophus has had these LEDs for a few years now and, KNOCK ON WOOD, they have performed flawlessly from day one. They may not be the brightest or the "latest" high-tech but they're dependable and WORK.

I originally ordered those 92 LED bulbs from v-leds.com but later found the 96 LED bulbs I used above to be brighter. I stuck the v-led's in my wifes car and put the new ones in my truck.

My lens is really thick and vertually black not allowing much light through.
I would like to get more brightness for safety reasons.

From reading on the net a few have encountered issues using LM487 units produced overseas. Just make sure you get the one like in Dick's pix that has "Made in the USA" printed on it.

From the threads I read (on the net, so you may want to do a bit of reading before buying) Autozone sells a made in the USA version as well (would be easy enough to check if they have them in stock). It was also mentioned that the Tridon LM487 is also made in the USA. It is available on Amazon for $36.48 at this link:

If you read the reviews on Amazon several have upgraded to the Tridon module for LED use and have had no issues.

The NAPA LM487 is the Tridon part and is $32.79 most places. I bought mine at the local NAPA store for $30.

Save everyone a few bucks. Mine works great with no issues with Cruise control or anything.

No idea how prevalent the Chinese modules are, do know that NAPA still sells some of'em since the one I stopped at here on Tuesday (in DC) had one printed with "Made in China". That is why I ended up ordering the Tridon (made in the USA) brand on Amazon.

As I mentioned it is easy enough to check. Just stop by your local parts store and ask to see the one they stock (if it is behind the counter). Where it is made should be printed on the module or the packaging.

I had a problem with the the cruise control after installing the NAPA LM487 and LED's in the tail lights. The local Chevy dealer (after a day and a half in their shop) advised me the rear tail gate stop light was defective and drawing too much current. I ordered a used one from Wild Bill as GM no longer makes them. Put in the replacement tail gate light and guess what, still no cruise control. I finally searched the SSR fanatic site and found out there is a problem with the NAPA part. Joseph LaCourt (very nice guy) with Novita adivised me to check with Auto Zone for an LM 486 which I did, ordered and installed the part and the cruise control problem went away. Let's see, $ 50.00 for NAPA LM487, $ 130.00 for tail gate light, $ 385.00 at local dealer, and an additional $ 47.00 for the Auto Zone LM486. I think I'll start my next "problem search" here before I go out on my own. Any body need a used but in good condition tail gate light?

You really cant go by application guides much any more with an SSR because they are usually not included due to being a specialty vehicle.

I bought these LED's and they work fine.
Go by 3157 bulb search. Anything that replaces a 3157 bulb will work for the most part.

So if I'm reading this correctly, all I need is one NAPA LM-487 LED turn signal adaptor (made in USA) and two ea. Red 3157/3156 SMD 96 LED Stop/Brake bulbs @ $28.99 each. By plugging these parts in I will have rear LED Brake/Stop lights and should need nothing else. Am I correct?

Not sure where you are shopping, Skid . . .

From my experience with V-LEDS.com, all Tail / Brake LEDs are sold in pairs and it looks like the price you've posted is for a pair, not each. Considerably cheaper than when I purchased them three years ago.

Other than that point, you are correct and should be GOOD TO GO.

GOOD LUCK

Thanks DOOPHUS. I am looking to order them from DT-Autotech as recommended by BDMRIDGEBACK. I believe you are correct. They are $28.99 per pair.

If this is the combination that is a forum consensus winner, I will get my order started tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help.

V-LED dropped their 92 LED bulbs because they were not lasting very well.

Developed the 21_R LED with only 21 LED and much brighter.

Also has heat sink on end of unit.

For the SSR 3157 is the connection size for our R.

Part# you should order is: 3157-21_R (R for Red)

These LEDs are much brighter and better than their original 92 LED.

REMEMBER you need Novita Tridon LM486 Flasher to make your lights work.

Hmm, that's interesting. I have the 92 LED bulbs and last summer one started flickering when the brake was on, so I replaced it. Then later the other side failed to light when I hit the remote button to lock it. It wouldn't light at the unlock either, so I started the truck and put the 4 ways on, and sure enough it was dead. No problem I have a spare at home, but being old and feeble I forgot until the next time I was going somewhere, but when I got there and locked it the bulb lit, and has worked for about six weeks now.
This new bulb would be the perfect excuse to upgrade them both. Thanks Dick.

So we have a standard socket and do not have a CK socket.
I wonder why we can't use white LEDS, which put out a lot more light(lumens) since we have red lenses?
