I'm posting this for the benefit of anyone thinking of taking the plunge on 4.56 gears, as my experience has not been all good so far.

FWIW: My vehicle is an early VIN 2003. I replaced the gears and of course the speedo was off, but I also had the traction control kick in when the vehicle hit 2nd gear. I disable the T/C so I can drive it until I get a programmer to change the axle ratio and all will be well, but no, I go through the Crane and Superchips programmers and neither would work with my car at all (BTW, the techs for these companies were less than helpful - Crane in particular wouldn't return a phone call and I'm a friggin dealer). In desperation I try a Predator, which does load, but after correcting the gear ratio the speedo error INCREASES and the traction control is now permanently disabled.

GM techs are scratching their heads on what is going on - they've had the truck for a few days now flashing proms, etc.

Good news is the combo of Predator, Magnaflow and gears has me running with Mustangs and Camaros. That 1-2 shift will slam you back in the seat.

Moral of the story - make sure your truck will work with a programmer that can reprogram the gear change BEFORE you slap the gears in - there are plenty of threads of people having issues with programmers with the SSR.

Good alert. I didn't run into this problem because I had my tuner make the gear ratio change in the PCM software using HP Tuner. Pretty easy to do that way.

The microtuners SHOULD do this easily too, but as you point out, there have been issues with the microtuners on MANY SSRs.

By the way, your SSR activating traction control on the shift into 2nd does not surprise me either, with you having the supercharger installed.

I am running into PCM-activated torque management and traction control issues that are not causing problems as severe as yours, but ARE limiting my SSR's wide open throttle performance to a shadow of what SHOULD be happening based on both my dyno curve aand my part throttle performance (VERY crisp!!).

This is exactly why I am studying all 3 software manuals (HP Tuner, LS Edit, EFILive) right now PLUS looking for any aftermarket book or expert willing to talk about how the GM maze of torque management, traction control, and electronic throttle management controls and interrelated conditional statements all interact to cause this.

physco sorry you are having so much trouble. I to had the TC trouble on the way home after the gear change. I have a early 04 and the predator fixed the problem. No speedo problems either. I do not have the super charger so that did not cause the problem. good luck.

psychoslaphead -- Sorry to here of your dilemma. I installed the 4:56 gears and the Diablo Predator. No problems yet. Definately changes the attitude of the "ride".

Jim G. -- I had set the backlash at .005 and used the Moroso lube -- it is "whiny" but who cares as I feel it will lessen as I put mileage on. I checked the "strap" on the u-joiint and I left it on as I didn't have "the Tink". Started working on the installation of a Magnacharger supercharger when I was told to go do a project in Ashland, KY. and I won't be home till mid-August. Stay Tuned!

I also had a weird deal with the drivers side door sensor - everytime it rained or after washing the sensor would give a constant open door reading, which meant that for several days after I had to: 1) listen to a constant chime saying the door was ajar and 2) not be able to lock the vehicle, as the alarm would go off. The sensor has been replaced in later production with something waterproofed I gather.

I'm really looking forward to getting my sick truck back to 100%....

1. What BRAND of ring and pinion did you use?

2. Are you getting the whine at ALL speeds or does it start (or become audible) at a certain speed?

Jim G
Jim G. -- Used Motive Gear including their installation kits (front and back of differential). The whine started out in take-off till about 25 MPH and in coast from 25 MPH to stop, but thru about 30 miles of "checking her out", the whine went away on start-up and still whines slightly on coast back down to stop. I won't be able to drive her again until August when I get back. (Can't take a good ride into a steelmill!) I really am not bothered by the whine as I have always had it when installing the low gears including 5:13s on the street. Patience!!
