4:56 road test

Took the SSR to Sacramento and back. I ran a tank of gas through and with the 4:56 gears I averaged 16.8 miles per gallon. Not much of a differance. I was avg 17.5. I kept it at 70 miles per hour which is 2600 rpm. It purred all the way. No whine or extra noise. :) :) :) :seeya

cbruer, you would not have done that good with the 4:56 gears. It is a trade off. I do not make alot of long trips. The majority of my driving is in town and around the courntry. For me the gas is not an issue. If I where running up and down the freeway and or commuting to work it would be a differant situation. If you want a light to light rig the 4:56 gears are the way to go. The one thing about this site is it allows us to get great info and base our decisions on what are needs are. I have made the trip up the coast it is awsome, hope you had a great trip.
Remember that in a separate posting on fuel mileage with 4.56 gearing, I pointed out how I PROVED that the loss in fule mileage in going to the 4.56 axle was only 7.4%.

That means that your 19.4 mpg would have been 18.0 MPG.

It IS a loss in fuel mileage, but if you drove my SSR with its 4,56 axle, I guarantee you you would want that 4.56 axle. It transforms the vehicle, not just in hard acceleration, but even more in everyday use. It feels nimble, where before it felt a bit labored moving that 4700 lb plus driver around.

You can easily get that 7% mileage loss back with a few simple mods. And who buys a heavy truck with a 300-390 hp V8 if they are worried about mileage anyway? :confused
Jim is right, the differance in performance is worth the extra fuel to me. It is much more fun to drive. I was coming home from my granddaughters birthday and it had showered a little. My wife was driving her Sequoia. (school bus) When I would get on it it was all over the road. I got the ticket lecture when we got home. Momma just dont understand ha
OK, I'm convienced! Where do I get it and how much is it??

Forgive the questions but as an add-on to Ghostrider's question:

1) Does this require a new 'something' to transmit to the speedometer? Otherwise I assume the speedometer would be about 4.56/3.73 = 1.22 or 22% off, yes?

2) How much quicker does the 0-60 come? What kind of rpms are you running at 60?

3) Is there anyone around I could visit to try theirs? I am interested in a roadtrip to meet some of you all, but am especially interested in a ride in some of these with mods. (Cheaper to make a trip than invest in some mods I wasn't happy with)
PS You are all welcome to come to WI and visit anytime too. (I have a very large frig full of beer) PM me if you are coming through (dead center of WI)

4) To what extent does swapping rear gears void the GM warranty? Does it only void the warranty on the axle or the whole truck? Would they even know (unless axle problem? Is this something better off not being done at the GM service dept I take it?

Thanks!

Whoops - I probably should have done that too...Maybe I asked something that was not answered.
Thanks Jim.

The ECU on the truck has variable fields that can be altered via tuning software or a microtuner. The axle ratio is one of those fields. Shift points should also be examined and adjusted.

2) How much quicker does the 0-60 come? What kind of rpms are you running at 60?

The 0 to 60 time difference from purely the gearing change will be at least 0.8 seconds, but can be larger depending on your driver weight, amount of fuel on board for the acceleration run, and your specific SSR's place in the statistical bell curve of engine power. My personal SSR, which includes the 4.56 axle mod plus custom dyno tuning using HP Tuner, is now about 1 1/2 seconds faster to 60 mph.

The rpm at 60 mph is now 2198 and feels very good.

Wisconsin is pretty far from either my home in Texas or my temporary assignment in Atlanta. Anyone closer is welcome to contact me for a demo ride (ride, not drive).

4) To what extent does swapping rear gears void the GM warranty? Does it only void the warranty on the axle or the whole truck? Would they even know (unless axle problem? Is this something better off not being done at the GM service dept I take it?

GM would have a pretty tough time under warranty laws exlcuding anything from coverage that is not directly related to the axle ratio change. And, as you point out, they shouldn't even KNOW about it. It is YOUR property, not theirs. The biggest concern I have is that mechanic might at some point accidentally overwrite my ECU programming, without my prior approval, thus wiping both the speedometer correction and the tuning. I have a backup CD for this reason.

Thanks!
