The private-equity owner of specialty-car supplier ASC Inc. has the company up for sale, according to four people in the financial community.
Southfield-based Questor Management Co. L.L.C. has been working with CIBC World Markets to shop Southgate-based ASC, said the sources who didn’t want to be named.

Questor wouldn’t comment, citing a policy of not discussing its plans, said Lisa Williams, director of communications. ASC deferred questions to Questor.

ASC, which reported $493 million in 2004 revenue, makes car bodies, and convertible and sunroof systems, specializing in niche vehicles. Questor bought ASC in 2002 from the estate of the late Heinz Prechter.

Questor is interested in recouping its investment, but won’t undersell, the sources said.

“If they can’t get a reasonable price, they won’t sell it,” said one source.

The sources said it’s a tough time to sell with so many other automotive assets on the market. But Questor is raising a third fund and may want proceeds for that, three of the sources said.
