Broke down

I broke down yesterday just outside of Valdosta GA. I stopped for gas and truck would not crank. I tried jump starting it even though it showed 12.4 volts and that did not work so I called AAA and they tried to jump start as well and it would not crank. So they towed it to Chevy dealership. My good friend George Michael jumped in his car and made the 2 hour drive to help. We tried everything we could think of including trying to jumpstart it again, checking battery disconnect switch and a new ignition switch and nothing. This morning at dealership they tried to jumpstart and nothing. They did a test and only had 181 CCA so installed a new battery and everything all good. I had installed a new battery about a year and half ago when I changed starter. Two reasons for my post to let you the situation on the battery and give a shout out to George. He stayed with me the entire time and followed me home to make sure no issues. What a great friend and what a family we have!!!!

Glad you made it home. Yes, batteries do die at odd times and sometimes suddenly. Had this happen to me in Orlando on vacation once, and here at home one time. Both times there were no indications of a bad battery beforehand and both times the vehicle was driving fine and then shut down for no more than 5 minutes before restarting attempted. I could not start it and jumping did nothing to solve it. Same scenario.

Kudos to George for assisting!

Were the attempts at jump start a "jump box" or were good high quality jumper cables ever involved.

I witnessed two different jump boxes fail to start a car and then good old high quality cables fired that SSR right up.

In hindsight:
I don't think anybody bothered to check voltage while trying to crank with these "high amp jump boxes". I would bet they didn't have enough Wheaties for the job.

That same guy i posted about the electric jack did one on jump boxes.
His test was to start a big block 454 with no battery, just the jump pack.
I bought the one that did it, LOL
And it has jumped my '01 Prowler and lawn mower multiple times without recharging.

just throwing this out, but my wife Subaru had a cell go bad in a 2 year old battery last winter and it would not just start (with battery box or cables off pickup). I had to go bring new battery to car and change in lot (did not want to tow) Worst part was she parked "front in" in a bad spot with a damn bush to fight LOL

Glad it wasn't anything very serious but a lesson for everyone to check out if the same scenario occurs!

Doesn't surprise me that George @DoubleVision made a bee line to be there for you! You both are such great guys! 😎

Great to hear you got it going, back in the day mine failed the same way. My years in the shop and elsewhere found most batteries fail in hot weather, not cold like many think. Cold batteries get weak or low on charge, but typically complete failures are heat related.

I had mine do exactly the same. Wouldn't start. Tried to jump with cables,👎👎 two different vehicles👎👎.
Called AAA and jumped with jump box and started right up👍 but it quit within 10 minutes of him leaving so I jumped it again with jumper cables but before I got home it quit again in rush hour traffic in the main lane of traffic. The doors were locked. I shifted to park to start it. The battery was dead, so here I am, locked in, in the middle of the street in rush hour traffic. A city police officer stopped traffic. I finally figured out I could unlock the door manually, but it was still locked in neutral so we couldn't push it out of the street so a 4x4 jumped it again and the police followed me home.
I checked the battery and it showed 12+ volts so I took it to O'Reilly's and it had a bad cell and would not take a charge. New battery and all is well.
So, it's like, a bad cell stopped it from taking a charge. Only 5 cells but still checking as 12v.
It would start with a big enough boost but not keep running.

Tom had called me, and I thought solenoid or starter, but Tom said Starter solenoid and starter were a year old and so was the battery.

BOY! I'll be glad when we go to "ALL ELECTRIC" vehicles, only need two "D" battery to "jump" start your R.

New Battery in Florida last 6 months to 4 years, depending on how HOT it gets.

If you are using a battery maintainer, you might be killing the battery, if you are not maintaining it at 8 amps or more. Experience here. There are listed maintainers by the various manufacturers, that they suggest. The right one can even restore a weak battery. I prefer Schauer. I have 3 and kept my R on one 24/7 when not on the road. This brand was suggested to me by Odessy, after I killed one of their AGM batteries in about 24 months, with the “green” trickle charger.
if this isn’t the case… I’m out! Or… ignition switch??

I had a similar thing happen on a less than year old Interstate battery. Luckily after the third time it died we left the jumper box for half an hour and I made the 90 minute trip back home. Of course they gave me a new battery and paid the installation, but I am worried that it took a year to fail.

I use the brand Battery Saver and have for over 10 years. I spoke to them yesterday and they assured me leaving maintainer on did not and does not kill battery. They stated they have been in business for over 30 years and the only time that it is impacted a battery by leaving it on all the time is if they had a maintainer fail and if that is the case the stand behind their warranty. They also gave me a few tips on checking the battery with a maintainer such as if you leave it hooked up but unplugged it will provide you with a battery check.
