I have operated the roof manually. It takes a very high force to release the tonneau by pulling on the cables. You are pushing fluid through the shut down hydraulic system. A strong, long pull is required. Everything moves slowly and you need a steel handle inserted into the wire loops. The roof tool has a small groove to capture the wire for this purpose. Hopefully no one has to actually do this.
