Did the Airbags Deploy?

dohyatt,

Did the side airbags deploy. The front drive and passenger ones do not appear to have deployed. This is a little disturbing because it looks like the hit definitely should have deployed them (the front airbags). However maybe not, but the side impact airbags definitely should have deployed. Did they?

I Don't Know!

It wasn't head on enough to deploy front bags. and looks like the drivers side wasn't hit far enough back for side bags.
Wildcat66,

You may be right, but with a crash like this I really would expect deployment of the side airbags and maybe the front airbags; especially since the car was totalled (I assume).

However, when you look at the cockpit everything seems in tact that is great, but the airbags are to prevent bodies from contacting the windshield and other hard parts of the vehicle.

I hope the passengers were okay. There is no blood so maybe they were okay.

It is my understanding that the airbags are set off by a specified "rate of deceleration". As applied to this vehicle, it does not appear to have contacted anything solid enough to trigger the bags. Flipping, rolling, or being struck from the side will not cause the sudden deceleration needed, you must hit something solid, such as a brick wall, oncoming or stopped vehicle, etc....

I think perhaps this SSR would be in my price range, lol. :cool

Interesting theory

Blue6T9,

If it were all based on rate of dedeleration then a stationary car that was hit by another car should not deploy it's airbag because the stationary car is not decelerating. Similarly, I don't think that there are anyincidents where the side of a car is ever decelerating. Therefore the side airbags would never deploy. Your statement is an interesting theory but I don't think that's the whole story.

Airbag deployment

Frontal or side airbags will not deploy on a roll over. They are only design to go off on a sudden forceful impact. A rollover is in constant motion so there is not as great of a sudden stop.

Hehhh...

Someone has already taken the rear view mirror and the toothpick holder (some of you call it a change tray).

Diggs

P.S. Upon further review, it looks like maybe the mirror was just pushed up out of view on the shot of the interior.

With the look of the interior, it sure doesn't look like it, as long as the occupants had their SEAT BELTS on! :)
Remember, if Princess Diana had has hers on, even as bad as the Mercedes was smashed up, she would be alive today. :angel

Deceleration is just the negative of acceleration. I'm sure the sensors involved are tuned to a particular acceleration while not necessarily dependant on the direction. If the vehicle is hit hard enough to generate a high enough acceleration it will trigger the airbag. This would not be dependant on if the vehicle were moving or not, just needs a high enough rate of change of the velocity (acceleration).

Hope this helps..

Thanks Hdflstf,

As I indicated earlier I think that the airbags should have deployed. I looks like there should have been enough force to trigger the front airbag and to definitely trigger the side airbag.
