I don't want to get into understanding why Chevy's designers allocated so much valuable space under the dash for an ashtray that is unsuable to drivers that don't smoke in their cars and the cupholders seem like aftertoughts, at best. After reading the book, "SSR, An American Original" I understand that part of the business case was to create a profitable accessories market for the enthusiasts who would buy the SSR. With that said, if anyone from Chevy is watching, PLEASE design a replacement for the ashtray that has decent cupholders, that could be a swap out for those who would like it.
Who else would buy one?

I see someone got a little smarter at GM and on the 05's made the cup holder on the hump attach from right to left instead of up and down. Everytime I reach for my drink I bring the holder along. Hope this designer only worked on the cup holder?

Too Much Space For An Ashtray ???

Are you kidding??? The ashtray in the SSR is too small for a smoker!!!!! You nonsmokers have made it so the only place we can smoke is in our vehicle... I think it should be a larger ashtray, I don't think people should be allowed to Drink and Drive !!!!! :glol

Folks up here in Wisconsin would beg to differ on one opinion. We look at drinking and driving as a SPORT :cheers . Some newspapers have even written articles as to the lengths we will go to, not to get caught at it (IE. designated decoys).

Where one patron would leave a bar (knowing that there would be an officer lurking somewhere), stumbling around trying to find his/her vehicle, once finding it, he/she would proceed to turn on and off lights, wipers, horn, etc. until all other patrons have left. As the first patron was finally driving away the officer would pull him/her over and issue a breathelizer test, only to find that the person is completely sober :confused . The officer thinking the equipment was not working asked the person to accompany him to the Hospital for some blood work. At this point the person would inform the officer that the equipment is fine, and that he/she was the designated decoy for the night, so that everyone else could get home safe.

Don't take this the wrong way, but this is a true story from a suburban area of Milwaukee, WI.

Just pull the cup/bottle/whatever sideways toward the hump before lifting. It will slip out.

Wait a minute

Fuzzy, are you saying you can order a replacement cup holder for the right side and install it in the left side? I was wondering if that could be done, and it makes a lot more sense than the one hanging on the side of the console! If you can do that, what's the part number, cost, etc???

Oh yeah, one more thing...

The only use I've found for that dumb thing on the left side is to hold my fob for the AstroStart so it doesn't bang against the dash as I go over the zillion frost heaves and potholes in the Fargo area.

Yep, you can get a cupholder for the left side. It is the right side holder, which fits in the left side once the coin holder is removed. The front face is a separate part from the cup holder/coin holder. It can be removed from the coin holder and placed on the cupholder.

Part number is # 10369706 Through the GM parts counter. Cost is $67.22

I haven't installed it yet, so I couldn't tell you what it takes to do that. I will have it installed before I go on the Power Tour though.

Didn't mean to slight the smokers

My comments were regarding the priority the designers seemed to put on the ashtray vs the cupholders, given that 100% of drivers get thirsty, and less than 100% smoke. When taking the SSR on a lng ride it would be nice to have somwhere to put a drink, that is stable and not in the way. Just wishing.

The coin holder on the left side of the dash is the perfect place to put driver's license and gas card...no room anywhere for a purse! ;)
My garage door opener fits nicely, with room for a row of quarters.

Yes I know the mirror can be programmed to do that, but they can be operated by anyone when I leave the top down, window open... I really wish GM would change the specs. to include an ignition sense cutoff on the homelink system. I'd consider programming the silly thing if it did.
