Hitch ball rod and wiring

5668 Views 34 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  birdmans
I bought my new SSR about a month ago. Its a 2004 red one. I was putting the rear licence plat on and noticed it has a hidden reciever. I can't find the ball rod and wiring. Must one purchase the parts or are they supposed to be included? The window sticker states: trailer hitch and wiring; as standard equipment.

Thanks----- Joe

Can you get your hitch hooked up without it?

GR

I don't know, I am about afraid to try for fear of not being able to remove it afterwards
My question is:
Can you install the hitch 180 deg out as someone has suggested ?

Why would I want to do this ?

1.) I`ll know where it is and wont have to look for it when I need it.

2.) When Im not towing it will still be hidden.

Thanks,
Pretzel~

180 deg out? Nope, It only fits one way. I tried. 180 would have been sweet. That with a bag to keep it clean.

It gets quite dirty if left in for a prolonged time. Then the job of removing it becomes a messy one. I recommend it be installed only when needed.

Soooo....do you need a key to put it in and take it out or is that just so that someone doesn't steal it?

Yes, a key is necessary to install, remove.
Thanks....
I guess I have to go get a key made then.

If you did not get a key with your hitch, I would go back to the dealer and have them trade it out for another, one with keys. Your hitch should come from GM with three keys. they are needed to install and remove the hitch. You will end up spending a lot of money at a locksmith to get one to rekey it.

I bought mine Dec. 2003....I have no idea whether I got the keys or not. So I guess I'll have to fork out the money.

Thanks.
Thanks to the good descriptions I found the wires quite quick.

But there is still a question ... can I just install the connector? Or do I have to reprogramm the electronic control unit ? I know that this has to be done for some other cars .

Just add a 4 prong plug and your good to go.

Thanks for the quick answer . It's not that easy because we need in Germany seperate turn signals , but nonetheless much easier than reprogramming the control unit . Puuuhh ...

The owner manual shows the color code. I would see how this lines up with the modifications that were done to make the vehicle legal in Germany and then add the extra wires necessary to make what you need for the trailer. Should be fairly simple to test. I am guessing the four would be ground, tail, brake and one turn and you shold only need the other turn added.
1. I have failed on two tries to find the taped-up wiring harness. We're sure it's down there, eh?

2. My hitch doesn't quite fit all of the way into the receiver. It seems to click in place, but the marks don't line up. I'm thinkin' that my next step is to file down the triangular guides a bit.
1. Jarp. It´s on the frame, driverside, roughly 15" behind the wheel on the inner side of the frame. Follow the electric harness and you´ll more feel than see the wires directly taped on the harness.

2. I had the same problem. The socket (hope that´s the right word) was double and triple painted, so I removed the thick colour, spray painted the socket, then polished the triangles (grinding marks). Finally it worked well.
hitches are always on ebay. Some reasonably, some not. Also the original manufacture still makes them under GM license. So you can get one brand new. Don't have a link. I think $300 but some venders sell them for about $250?? as I remember. My newly acquired 03 came with the hitch and 3 keys. Was told it should have been in a zippered bag? Also a video on you-tube of the install. Better then someone telling you how to install. Blogs say the hitch is illegal as it has the safety chain attachment [on] the hitch itself. DOT says they are to be separate from the hitch. I doubt the law [man] would know this? I doubt you would be ticketed. Some use the hitch just to keep vehicles from hitting the plastic fascia. Towing is so-so as the SSr is always on the verge of over heating. A larger RAD, mikes cooling fan and a few more things can be done [if] like some you really want to tow a trailer? Most of this is on the site via searches.....birdmans
