Maybe I'm missing something but why does it need to be "at home"? I thought scanners just plugged into the OBD port and did there thing, and were portable.

If you are looking for an OBD scanner there are literally hundreds available out there.
The cheap low end ones just provide the code which you will need to google to determine what it means.

Some of the higher end scanners interpret the code and provide limited diagnostics.
Either one pretty much just reads Engine and emission codes and some limited transmission codes, will not diagnose body, brake system or non engine related electronic issues.
