I owned an 03 SSR and I test drove an 05 SSR.

05 SSR (auto) was faster off of the line, but remember this is still a 4700 lb truck. 05 6.0L engine had a "very" rough idle. My 03 was a bit rough too, but nothing like the 05 6.0L.

05 steering was a bit crisper on low speeds, but I honestly could not tell a big difference between the two of them.

05 engine temp seemed to run about 15 degrees cooler than my 03 SSR in the same situation.

04 vs. 05 power

:flag I drove both. The 05 is faster, but will cost about $7,000 more for 90 HP. I bought an 04, and $4,000 will buy a supercharger for the 5.3 that would enable it to outrun the 390 HP 2005. However, all I do is CRUISE with this one of a kind truck! Only my opinion..... :ssr

05

:cool I have had both. 05 has more foot room. with the new door panels more leg room. much better steering. hood strutts, colored runnin boards. This truck will come very close to keeping up with the 03 supercharged. I know, that was my 1st SSr after supercharger it dynoed at 345rwhp. the 05 with headers dynoed 330rwhp as far as power. I gave less for the 05 than i did for my 03. that does not matter to me. if you have the change to buy the 05 thats what to do. I would sell the 03 and buy my 05 again in a heartbeat. NO second thoughts. :thumbs :ssr :flag :ssr :seeya

I only bought the 04 because it was SO much cheaper than the 05.

The 05 simply has a more "easy" feeling to it, where the 04 feels a little lumbering in steering and acceleration. Those are the only differences I found in driving them though.

I may get a two-toned 06 though, as I found it'll cost me about $6k and a month at the painter's, to get mine painted that way.

There's hardly any difference between the '03 and '05 except for some minor tweeks. It's all marketing strategy. The car is meant to be a custom designed vehicle and used for cruising. Except for taking away the hood brace and using different wheel bearing design, an extra brace on the frame for a stiffer chassis to assist and strengthen the retractable hardtop, different body mounts, and a larger bored engine, there is no difference. It's still pushing a lot of weight around and it's not designed to be like a Corvette or two seater sportscar. It's strictly a cruiser. Remember, it's marketing strategy, especially geared to make the consumer think they are getting so much more each year. You could invest less money and modify your '03 to do more than what the '05 can do.

I have to agree with BobA (no disrespect meant to FatherLarry).

I would also add that I have no proof, except for my ears, but I think the 05 factory sound system is better. Granted, I replaced the small speakers with better ones, but it was a big improvement from the factory.

The 6 speed sealed the deal for us. I love "rowing my own" and this is a lot more fun for me than the 04.

To each his own

I have not driven the '05, but my '04 is a daily driver. For an everyday in and out of traffice vehicle, a manual is a pain so I like my automatic. I don't really drive it fast and do not care that it has less horsepower. It has plenty of punch and rides fine. I bought the truck for its uniqueness and looks. If you don't drive the SSR that much and or if you are someone who has to have bragging rights and needs that 390 hp, then by all means get an '05. I don't think an '05 with a manual is all that fast anyway. Many of the sports cars and such out there will still blow your doors off. My SSR is for cruising to and from work, the grocery etc. IMHO :)
