I was reading some of the newer threads about why the SSR was not more in demand etc. and Chevy"s lack of marketing. I am really surprised that most of the advertisements in the last couple of years (most = commercial air time) had the top up?? The retractable top has got to be one of the best things about our vehicle. I am AMAZED that when people look or ask me about mine that they have no clue it is a convertible. Chevy missed the market in not making the general public more aware of the retractable top in more of their commercial air time in my opinion. Most people that I talk to say "is that the yellow vevicle that spun around backwards on the Chevy car carrier on tv"? Top should have been down! People remember that ad.

Marketing issues?

I had reported before on the Vancouver Auto Show - At the 04 show, a yellow SSR on the very noticeable outside corner of a very expensive display area was parked with the top up, and locked. I watched for a while, and several people wondered if it was a concept, why the top had a black line through it, or asked to see the top working. The answer? - sorry - don't know where the keys are. They probably paid 100K plus for the display space, spent a fortune on the carpeting and two storey structure, but can't afford a "marketing specialist" (that's a University student at 10 bucks an hour) to run the top up and down, and get people excited at this engineering marvel that GM was aple to bring to market.:banghead :banghead :banghead

At the 05 show, it was parked in the dark bowels of an upper concourse GM truck display, top up, locked, without any lighting. It was a dark truck. Oh yeah - it was Aqua Blur, but without any lighting on it to show how spectacular the paint was, it just looked dark.:eek

Of course, it won't be at the 06 show. No point marketing it now.

A fully loaded manual Redline at Edmonton's 2006 car show a few weeks back with the top up and locked up tight as a drum. :banghead Someone said it was sold...

There was a silver one at the DC auto show, unlocked and with top down for all to sit in and see - except one thing - they had the stops blocked off so you couldn't put the cargo bed cover down and see the full lines of the truck. I had to hold it down to show my girl what the roadster fully looked like (she has seen them mostly top-up as well)

hey Flassh

that '05 Aqua Blur from the car show ended up at my local chev dealership. It sure looked like 1000's of people sat in it, the thing was filthy! :eek They didn't even vaccuum the mats, and did a terrible job at removing the wax from the rocker panels.... It made me shudder to think how many times the top went up and down at the show - definatly were not interested in buying that particular truck. But we test drove it anyway! :lol I asked for a brochure and was told they had no '05s, but he managed to dig me up an '04 one.
Well, much to my delight it was from the '04 brochure that I learned they came in PURPLE!!! When I asked the salesman about finding a purple one, he totally dropped the ball and said Canada only got about 6 of them and I would never find one. :( So I went online myself and searched the local inventory. Almost fell off my chair when the dealership in Squamish was showing one in stock.
The rest is now history, boy that salesmen back in Langley was sure pissed off when I drove up in my new purple SSR! :glol

Hi, Turnheadz

Glad to see another one in the area. My mom's in White Rock, so drive through your corner of the world regularly. Just spent the last 10 days or so with set-up, show and tear-down from the Vancouver Boat Show.

Is Prestons your local dealer? When I saw the Aqua at the Van show, someone had keyed the rear quarter - sad to see. Don't know if I would be worried about the top going up and down - didn't happen when I went through the display going into and out of the show. When I asked, the "marketing specialist" used the old standby - dont' have the keys.

The dealership in Penticton also sold a purple one late last summer - it didn't stay in the south Okanagan, so not sure where it went.

Salesmen are not necessarily the best source of information. I saw a purple in Edmonton at Nicholsons, the one in Penticton, one was sold in Kelowna, and yours in Squamish - that's four for sure - 6 in Canada? i was also told at various times it was built on the Corvette platform, weighed the same as the Vette, runs run-flats, and GM was only building 500 (serial on the one I was looking at in the showroom was in the 3000 range at the time). What am I going to do for fun at dealerships now that the SSR is gone?

those salesmen

Hi Flassh,

Yes, Prestons is my local. The dealership in Squamish is Greg Gardner and I must give them :thumbs :thumbs I really enjoyed dealing with them, after I left they were like my extended family (that small town thing, I guess). Just got an invite from them the other day, having a customer appreciation night next week. Hope to take the :ssr up there. :)

As for your future entertainment, don't worry, there will always be uninformed/knowledge-challenged salesmen out there.

Sandy

P.S. We hope to get out to your Blossom Run this year. :seeya

Turnheadz,

Do you have a Rod? The Blossom run on the May long weekend is a closed event, with prior registration, open only for cars 25 yrs and older.

Their show and shine, on Saturday morning, is open to the public - I've had my yellow SSR there the last two years. Barring disaster, I'll be there again this year for the show and shine. There is also an open show and shine event in Peachland on the Sunday - usually a very good turnout. Let me know if you're coming down for it.

The bigger show is the Penticton Peach City Beach Cruise, June 23, 24 & 25.

Purple on the Island

I was in the dealership in Duncan ( Vancouver Island )last year and there was a Purple there and it was sold.
I gave the sales guy a card to pass onto the new owner as an intro to our site and have not seen them.
I think there are more than 6 in Canada.

Showoff

There's a traffic 1 block from my house. In the summer when I have to stop at the light I make it a point to put the top up there.
Sure screws up traffic.
