I have been a car restorer/collector for a number of years. Mostly Cadillac Allante's and a couple 1962 Thunderbird's thrown in. I only deal with original unmodified cars. I recently purchased a 2005 SSR. The Allante and the SSR to me have many of the same characteristics from a collectability stand point. Production of the Allante was 22,000 units total. SSR was 25,000. At the end of the production run a larger motor was put in the Allante, the 1993 Northstar motor. The SSR in 05-06 got the L-2 motor.
The oldest Allante's are now 26 years old. The 1993 cars with the Northstar motor demand a 33% premium over the earlier cars. There are several colors of the Allante that have small production runs (88 to 150 units each). That demands little in the way of a price increase unless you find a buyer that really wants that particular color.
The reason I bought the SSR instead of a Corvetts was the limited production run and the retractable hardtop. I believe in years to come the 05-06 cars will demand the same premium the 1993 Allante demands. Weather its an 05 or 06 won't make a difference. that's why I elected to not pay a premium now for an 06. If you have a certain color with certain options will make no difference in price just because that combination only was on a few units. The modified Allantes are difficult to sell and go for a lot less money. GM will run out of SSR parts especially on the real special items that are unique to the SSR. After market people don't want to tool up for such a limited production run.
My take on all this from an investment standpoint boils down to this.
1- buy an 05.
2- buy the color that turn you on with the best options.
3- don't modify it.
4- Clubs/forums will become more and more important for repair/ parts questions.
5- Speciality houses will develope to supply and sometimes manufacture special SSR parts.
