This may sound silly to some. I passed a chrome tanker the other day on the interstate and thought that would be neat to have a chrome SSR. Has anyone ever seen any vehicle like that? I know plastic can be chromed along with the metal. Would it even be legal? What would the guy next to you at the stoplight see? Would it be easier to maintain than paint? Rock chips on the front? I could hand out sunglasses at car shows. What about the "blue" chrome? Or, if it could be tinted red?

Can't seem to find it again, but there is a custom chrome shop in CA that was in the final stages of chroming an Escalade...The whole body. Found it through a link on a chrome forum, so yes it can and is being done...

Chrome

I saw a Chrome Jaguar at the LA car show this year and last year! It was pretty awesome! But... to keep that chrome polished is quite a chore! Finger prints, just the moist air will dull it! You think your SSR is hard to keep clean now, (especially black!) a chrome one will be 10 times worse! I know, I have an HD and keeping all that chrome shiny is a weekly (sometimes daily) chore!!

chrome SSR

I was told I would be kicked out of the house if I did that to my SSR. Here is a link with pics of a few cars chromed. http://forums.abum.com/lofiversion/index.php/t562.html
Check out the concept shelby gr-1 from the detroit auto show. One person mentioned it was about $4,000 for a car. There is a link further down the page to HOT ROD that shows a 1932 Ford that has had a cosmichrome application. It almost looks like a big HotWheel toy.
There is also another place, http://www.coatofchrome.com/. They claim to be able to chrome anything with any tint. They even did a real lobster. They have not responded to my email requesting info and prices yet.

I believe that the nextel cup cars are doing these days is just covering the cars with a special paint film like tint. I know a couple of yrs ago D.W. did this on his car for the winston. That way if you got tired of it you could just peel it off

Yeah Baby Chrome paint. Now lets see besides the paint you are going to need that new 2000 sunblocker, for the reflection, some pretty darn big UV Sunglasses, forget the tiniting of the windows cuz it will most likely melt off, and "Gawd" help the fool that leans up against it on a sunny day.

On the bright side (no pun intended) you will be a big hit at the cookouts, because you can grill your own food on the trunk!

I say go for it! And if you really have enough money to do that, please send me a check, too. ;)

chrome it

I got a response from COAT OF CHROME. I ask them about cost of a distributor cap versus a whole car. This is what I was told..

"The coil/distributer cap like you saw on the website costs about $85. The product is a lot more involved then sraying paint. A little hard to explain but between a sprayed on epoxy base coat and a spraryed on acrylic urethane topcoat the metalizing is actually a multi-step chemical deposition of real silver metal. A crude cost is about $50 a square foot. A lot of jobs require prep and masking and a cost consideration has to be considered for that labor. Chroming a car although technically feasible, and I have done pieces nearly as large as a car hood, would be an enormous amount of labor and who knows 15 - 20 thousand dollars. From a durability and flex point of view its comparable with a basecoat/clearcoat OEM automotive finish. Hope this helps."

It sounds like they can tint most any color, too. I don't think I will ever spend that kind of money to change the looks of my SSR. I don't have that much time to take it to shows, either. I would rather find a girlfriend and spend some money on her.

I'm doing the "car wrap" to my SSR in a few weeks to advertise my business. It'll be the 2nd vehicle we've done. I'll post a pic when I'm done for you..go to www.rareformindustries.com to see the stuff they do. Oh, someone mentioned the delorean..This guy can also wrap your SSR with a decal that looks like brushed aluminum.. He can do whatever you want he's great!! His name is Josh Eder.

Sounds Cool, but that car in chrome would cause to many wandering eyes and a an accident or two from awestruck folk in regular cars :lol

Me; I'd like to see the SSR in deep emerald green or lime :D

There is a SSR in Plano, Tx. with a Dr. Pepper wrap on it. Of course, to be fair, it might also be a custom paint job. :thumbs
