Police: 47 Pounds of Pot Found in Pickup

While investigating a domestic violence call Thursday afternoon, police uncovered 47 pounds of marijuana hidden in the back of a pickup.

Officers arrested David Dent, 31, of Haines City. He faces charges of trafficking in marijuana, resisting arrest and drug paraphernalia.

Police got the call about 3:20 p.m. and went to a house in the 400 block of North Fifth Street where a man and his girlfriend were fighting.

The drugs, estimated to be worth about $47,000, were found in the covered bed of a 2003 Chevy SSR by one of the department's K-9s.
"Officers were working a domestic violence call in which two arrests were made, and when officers returned to the scene to gather further information, the vehicle with the drugs in it was parked at the house," said police Lt. Brian McNulty said.

"They are two separate incidents," he said. The couple involved in the domestic dispute was not involved in the drug incident.

Dent will be charged with trafficking in marijuana, resisting without violence and drug paraphernalia, McNulty said. Police had not released the man's name by press time Thursday because they were still questioning him.

The man was not involved with the domestic violence incident.

The drugs were discovered in the covered bed of a 2003 Chevy SSR by one of the department's K-9s.

The marijuana was in two packages tightly wrapped with numerous layers of plastic wrap. One bundle weighed 23 pounds and the other weighed 24 pounds.

Police also found $2,270 in cash on the man who was arrested.

"The officers did a good job on this. There was a lot of cooperation between patrol and the Street Crimes Unit on this," said Sgt. Michael Green, who heads up the unit. "This is the largest amount of drugs we have recovered in a single arrest so far this year."
