This only seems to happen in cold weather.

It takes a number of pulls on the parking brake lever to get the parking brake actuated fully. During the first couple pulls, there seems to be very little resistance. After that, I get some resistance, but I need to try a couple more times until it feels firm enough to hold the truck in place. It's like it takes a few pulls before it starts grabbing, but after that, it works normally.

I can't imagine what would cause these symptoms. What's up?

Possible problem with the self adjusting mechanism built into the parking brake lever.

As long as you can get it to work I might not be too concerned right now -

I would be sure and tell trans shop and tow truck driver about the issue!!!

Attached is from the service manual regarding how to re-enabling the self adjuster operation -
(SORRY - No pictures that I could find!)

Haven't used mine in 5 or 6 years ... got it covered up with Turnheads leather "Cup Holder" which is very, very handy.
You should still cycle it on and off a couple of times a year at least - it keeps components from seizing up! Just be careful the next time you do try to use it - it may stick on. Better yet next time you take it in for an oil change ask the techs to check it out for proper operation - be sure to tell them why!
