Hi Arizonians,
Short notice I know, but my wife and I will be coming to the pointe south mountain resort in Phoneix, AZ arriving 2/24/2006 and was wondering if anyone wanted to do a short and sweet SSR run 2/25/2006 that wives would enjoy as well.
If not, then look for us tooling around town in a red SSR with the license plates "OP'S 05".

Hope to see ya'll around, supposed to meet Mike in AZ if he has time to do a fan install unless I do it previously.

Welcome!

I'm sure we can figure out some way to extend hospitality to make your trip more enjoyable. Shame you have to stay in such an old, run-down joint as the Pointe South Mountain...! :skep What say, guys - cruise, dinner, all of the above? :seeya

OP what is your eta over here. Perhaps a dinner at Rustlers Roost that Friday night?
Drive the next morning, out to Canyon Lake, is always a great run. Let's hope we can get Mike to help with the Fan Install early, and off we go to the long winding Apache Trail. (We all can go to Mikes and advise) :lol :lol

See ya soon

Saturday Run

Looks like a run out to Sagauro Lake, for a brunch might be in order here.
Close enough to town but great getaway for scenery and :ssr drive.
Right after installation of your new fan.

Visiting from California again . . . .

I'll be in Phoenix in about 6 hours also . . . visiting my son there.

Its 9:15 here so should be able to avoid the early rush.

Will also make the "Kingsburg Run" in reverse for the AZ gang that will caravan to Valencia . . . and then do it exactly as I would expect you guys will upon returning to Valencia Sunday afternoon. :)

Outta here :seeya

Please note your starting and ending locations and times and send me a PM. I want to check it against my mapping software for the accuracy of my speed variables for the roadways. I may be calculating drive time a little too optimistically.

Thanks,

Mike,

Well I made it, but this time took 7 hours 8 minutes of driving time (DIC) and only went 4 miles further (416) than my previous trip to Phoenix. Previously I did it in exactly 6 hours, but this time, for some reason, I was in bumper to bumper traffic 5 miles an hour for probably 45 minutes from just west of Banning/Beaumont to the 111 spur to Palm Springs. Have no idea for the slowup, but lots of campers and boats being towed and realized at that point that it is a holiday Monday (Birthington's Washday :lol ) and probably lots of traffice heading for the deserts.

I left Valencia at a point approximately 2 miles closer than the "tentative" meeting place for your caravan in Valencia, plus either you or someone from your forum suggested I take the Wittenberg route (US 60) instead of the I-10 for a diversion from Interstate driving. I did and really enjoyed that much more scenic route with the little "bergs" along the way for coffee and cokes. My ending point was Deer Valley Road near the I-17 freeway (traveling from a more centrally-located spot in Phoenix would probably be closer).

At any rate, I'll keep a fastidously accurate mileage and time record of my return to Valencia tomorrow and report back to you. I will be leaving at totally different times and day of the week, however, which could affect your times greatly (even though travel on the I- 210 essentially "skims" across the Northern boundary of LA and shouldn't be a big problem for you at the time you'll be going through there.

On the way I spotted a Slingshot traveling west on I-10 about 20-30 miles west of the border. Waved but the distance between us on the divided interstate may not have allowed them to see me.

Will get back to you, Mike, when I return.

Regards,

Thanks Gary

What was your starting location.... approximately.... in Valencia? I'll have to go thru the thread to extract the Valencic meeting point for Kingsburg. Thanks for the cross check on my mapping software. I'll put your route on US60 into the software also to check the lesser highway travel times too. I appreciate your input.

Have a good time and a safe trip home.

Mike,

I started from Lyons & I-5 in Newhall, CA (an Arco station precisely).

The "tentative" meeting point (as per Lloger on my suggestion) is at the Starbucks in Valencia on the northeast corner of Valencia & The Old Road, although GoogleEarth calls it Old Rock Road. As I said before excellent parking, right next to the I-5, an Albertson's with a great deli for a quick snack, a Starbucks with clean restrooms, etc.

Unless your start point for the Kingsburg Run is in North Phoenix (like near Deer Valley Road), I don't think there is any advantage in taking the Wickenberg, US60 route, other than most would consider it more scenic. As you know, most of it is just 2 lanes making passing other vehicles for a caravan a little dicey maybe. But that is, of course, your decision.

When I return to Valencia tomorrow I'll take the 101 loop to I-10 and take that route home eventually following the same route, once I get to the US60 junction. I'll try to get an accurate analysis of the times, speeds and break points and get back to you with it.

Enjoying my stay here. Really miss my son, so I'll probably be making this trip often over the next 12 months. :)

Great Gary,

When you transition from the loop 101 to I-10, please make note of the time. I'll make that a waypoint in the trip planning.

We'll be stopping in that area to gather up the west side cars on our way over.

Maybe next time you come over, we could get together up in the north Phoenix area for a meal. You'll have to give us a few days warning.

Safe Journey home,

Mike

Mike,

The entire trip home took exactly 6 hours running time (engine running), but about 10 minutes of that was driving by and taking pics of a home I used to own 26 years ago in Banning. I drove consistently 80 mph virtually all of the way, with a slight drop to around 70-75 in the Palm Springs area and when caught behind 2 semis passing on mountain passes of I-10.

The mileage from the I-10 & the 101 Loop junction was 387.3 miles (412 from I-17 and Deer Valley Road where I started from) and subtracting the 30 minutes to get from there to I-10, and the 10 minutes running by old home in Banning, leaves your running time from your "gather" point to Valencia of 5 hours and 20 minutes (an average of 72.62 MPH).

Of course, you'll have to add whatever stops you intend to make and maybe allow that it was easy for me to maintain 80 mph on a Sunday of a 3 day weekend, whereas you'll be making this trip on a Thursday or Friday. I don't know how his affects anything on Interstates, since you will be "skirting" the heavy traffic in LA with the I-210. Incidentally, I noticed very little warning when it was time to leave the I-10 and go to the I-210 (by way of the 57). A big sign saying these lanes for the 57 with a small notation down in the corner saying "to 210" ?

I left with a full cup of coffee and a full thermos of coffee, so my first stop was just east of the border at a truck stop with a Wendy's for a burger, a coke (breakfast) ! I got another cup of coffee in Banning when I looked for my old home place. [sidenote: brand new beautiful home in a new tract 26 years ago, now an absolute ghetto, junk and trash in the driveways and yards and bars on the windows - so sad]. So I only made 2 stops. Fuel bell and light came on as I pulled into our "meet " point in Valencia ! ! :)

If you plan on overnighting in Palm Springs the first Hiway 111 spur is 230 miles from your "gather" point. Cabazon would be at around 265 miles with plenty of reasonable hotel rooms and casinos.

Now that I have you completely confused here is a synopsis:

From I-10 and 101 Loop (your gather point) to Valencia Blvd. & The Old Road (next meet point) - - - - 387 miles (approximately 5 1/2 hours running time).

Had a great time. Avoided the heavy rains in So Cal. So only 1 Arizona Highway Patrolman and 1 Chip the entire trip ? Will return soon again to see my son.:seeya
