Well guys, it's true, my six year old son (whom is in cub scouts) has decided that the best looking and presumably fastest car for the pinewood derby has to be an SSR. :)
We were given the block of wood December twenty first at the pack meeting. We have it carved out in the shape of an SSR. When I asked him what color he wanted to paint it, he said it had to be deep candy blue with a green stripe. We sat down Sunday to draw the graphics and painted it Sunday night.
As the color was completed and cleared, his eyes lit up and said :reddevil "this is gonna be the fastedest car. I'm gonna beat them all" Pretty cocky for a six year old, but what the hey, it's his first race.
Will post a picture of it when completed, and let you know how it does in the race on Jan 18, 2005 :flag

Hey FUZZY,

Got a little hint for your SSR pinebox derby. Before I got into Harleys, I took 2 1/2 years and built a 47 Chevy Aerosedan streetrod. The street rod shop that I hung around at had an "adult" pinebox derby and it was a blast. BUT, here is what you can do to help his chances at Best of Show! I took pictures of all four (4) sides of the car, then cut them out and pasted them to the carved out pinebox shell. Really was kinda cool. (SEE BELOW)

You better take pictures, we need to see this piece of work. He will win best in show if nothing else. My boys are in scouts too, one wants to make his into a vette, the other (we love him anyway) wants his to look like the mustang. We have 3 weeks to work on it. Just tell your son to make sure the weight is set up right, that changes everything. :)

I remember those good old Derby days myself! It's nice to hear that the tradition goes on. More boys should get involved in scouting, but I believe it's the parents support that's missing for a lot of kids that don't! Good luck to your son, and you! :flag

Our next scheduled day to work on the car is Thursday Jan 6. We should be polishing the axels and trueing up the wheels. Hopefully, :willy: we can install the wheels and get pictures then.
As for auctioning it off when the derby is over????? :confused
I've still got all my old derby cars, not to mention the one I built for this years Parent's race. Even my daughter decided to build one :cheers , since the girl scouts don't have this event.
Look for the pictures either late Thursday night or Friday sometime.
