Hi all, Does anyone know if there are any secret codes in a VIN?...
HI Group,

I thought that question might be fun to ask in a poll. How many of you out there think that there is a "Secret" Code built into the VIN#?

Ps. If you would like please add some fun comments into your replies; either why you don't believe there are any or why you do believe there are "secret" codes, and if so... where would one look for it?

Not a secret code.

there is a code, but it's no secret. the entire code is run through an algorythm which can determine if the vin is valid or not. the purpose of the check digit is to manuipulate the vin so that it works out correctly.

As the sequence number changes, so too must the check digit.

Point of order. "Stating VIN#" is like saying vehcile identification number number
as the "N" stands for number.

Poll gets CUT short!

Yes Gunther you are correct, the check digit code is the key. Its there also to help law enforcement so they can verify whether its indeed a valid VIN# or not.

Ps I had hoped we could see how many would guess correctly.

PPs. Poll gets CUT short; I should take the blame for not stating "if you know the answer please wait to the end of the 3 day poll."
