I'm headed out Sunday on a road trip going up I-5. Most likely I'll spend the night in Medford OR. Any recommendations on a place to stay?? Monday I'll be in Portland for the week. Any fanatics up there?

I saw a post from a Portland member, 79U I believe. I am across the river west of Vancouver WA. I'll keep an eye out for ya. Watch the portland traffic, it sucks, all interstate lanes stop frequently.

Ditto on Ashland - stayed there twice, awesome artsy town, some very nice restaurants. Don't have a name for you, but there's a very nice old hotel downtown that's worth checking out.

We stayed on the outskirts where there was lots of parking and the SSR felt safe.

However...... If I had a 6 speed, I'd be taking the extra time and cruising 101 - that was an awesome trip, and would be even better with the manual. Stayed one night in Florence, at a motel on the ocean, a couple of miles in and north - it was November, and we kept the patio door open so we could listen to the pounding surf - the room was a little damp and cool in the morning, but slept great.

One thing I got into the habit of doing on our road trip- Once parked, I opened the hood, and pulled out the starter relay - slept a lot better knowing the only way to steal it was to tow it.

Have a safe trip.

Sounds like I need more time to check out the area. Good ideas for a vacation with my wife.

Flassh - great thought about the relay. Thay way I can disable both vehicles.

hdflstf,

Have a good safe enjoyable trip. I'm planning my trip to Ohio right now for the second week in September. My only plan so far is to head towards South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore then visit my family in Ohio. On to Niagara Falls, back to Ohio then head back to California. That's a lot of miles, but looking forward to it. It will hurt a little to leave the SSR out and get it dirty, but I'll find hand washes along the way and try to keep it clean and shinny.

Day 1

Made it to Medford OR. Highlight of the day was the 5 series BMW passenger telling me we wants the car being towed.. Had stares, thumbs up for 12+ hours on I-5. Did the requisite Q&A with a trucker at a rest stop in northern CA - both vehicles. Tows like a dream, the only time it got 'hot' was on a hill behind an 18 wheeler, had to downshift into third and was at about 30 mph for awhile. After going through the gears, the temp went to about 230 / 235 for a short time.

Oh yeah.. Saw a southbound slingshot on I-5 north of Sacramento. Did a big wave but he didn't see me. Next time..

Day 2 report (Tow gas mileage)

Finished the drive - no issues. I'm sure glad I didn't drive the 'vair with the 100 deg plus outside temps.

The SSR mileage was 17.4 mpg average for the trip (1000 miles). It was running closer to 18 until I got into the mountains.

Eric,
Actually I'm "single" for the week. No wife, no stitch. But.. everyone here knows me so no worries about me getting too far out of line..
