Why are some vatical and others horizontal ?

The 03/04s started out as vertical. Then they figured out that they would break when the seat got moved forward like to get to the rear fuse box. So GM changed them in 05 to the horizontal ones on the passengers side only. The drivers side stayed vertical but less got broken because the seat was not ran up all the way like on the pass side for the read fuse box. When they switched to the horizontal they would push the cup holder out of the slide rather then break it.

I had always thought that the change to horizontal was in 2006. I could be mistaken, but would like the serial number of an ‘05 with the horizontal cup holder on the passenger side….. is your ‘05 passenger one horizontal or vertical?

Gotcha on this one, Mike . . .

The Doophus is a 2005 and came with a Horizontal Cup Holder on the right side.

I will check all three of my 05s and grab vins. My 04 has a horizonal cup holder on the passengers side but I changed the side panel of the console to do it. When I sell that truck it will make someone scratch their head as I did almost all of the later model year updates to it. Door panels, wipers, air cleaner air box and cup holder on the console

My guess is the changeover happened as they ran out of stock of the colored part of the console as they are interchangeable with underlying components.

FWIW: both our 06 Rs are horizontal, silver 2793 and pac blue 2570, which is no surprise. Further, I’ve purchase a NOS silver console and it was horizontal.
