Wagoner: GM will move cautiously on production

By Jason Stein
Automotive News / January 10, 2005

Don't expect a glut of Saturn Skys or Pontiac Solstices on dealership lots in 2005 -- at least not because of overproduction.

And don't expect to see a load of additional vehicles off General Motors' Kappa architecture that will be used on the Solstice and Sky roadsters.

GM CEO Rick Wagoner said the automaker will use a cautious production plan for its new line of niche vehicles after seeing other halo vehicles sit on dealership lots.

"We are going to be pretty tough about how many we produce," Wagoner said Sunday. "We're going to be very disciplined about increasing production, because while it seems like we make decisions that don't look very smart, we do learn from them."

Wagoner said GM "probably overproduced" the Chevrolet SSR and Pontiac GTO in 2004.

Wagoner said GM will gauge the market more closely when it comes to niche vehicles in the immediate future. That includes new products from Pontiac and Saturn.

He added: "We should play those for what the market wants."

What I was told just last week by someone higher up in GM this ... "The dealers "screamed" that they wanted more, more, more SSRs so GM said OK, OK, OK! Now they all have learned a very hard and sad lesson, one that we already know...

PLLLLEEEAAASSSEEE NO more over production! :nono

GM hopefully now realizes that they have to be much more careful in how they react to the market place and "especially" the dealers out-crys for more and more. :skep

Amen to that!!! Maybe pricing will stabilize, and keep the resale market a little bit stronger.

Flip side of that coin though is pulleeeze don't create a limited production high performance or final edition - build us a super SSR, but build as many as the customer base demands, again keeping pricing stable. We don't really need another opportunity for unscrupulous dealers to gouge us, do we?

Marc,

No slam against GM corporate, but at the dealers.

Of course they were shouting for more! Charging 5 to 10K over sticker, they had a gravy train going there for a while.

Greed, the root of all evil!

I'm highly interested in the Solstice - as my daughter will need a car about the time it's released....
