When I test drove an 05 last week I did noticed a whining noise when I revved up the engine, however, I thought that it was just part of the normal sounds of the newer 6.0 L engine. I really didn't think it was a belt issue but then I didn’t have time to really scope it out more. :confused
That was one of the reasons why I gave last years 5.3L an A++ because to me it sounded so much nicer.
My 2004 did sound more throaty than my 2005. But the 2005 still sounds good. I actually like it better. My 2004 got a little loud in the cabin. The 2005 still sounds great, but you can hear yourself think in the cabin. No idea what any whine is. Mine does not wine.
The guy we talked to said it was a problem with all 05's, that's why I asked if anyone else had any problems. He said the engine had too much power and didn't turn the belt fast enough so it made the whining noise...but who knows, he may be full of beans! I think we'll go drive an '05 tomorrow and see how it goes.
In the one I drove there was a definite detectable higher pitch sound (I will try to compare the noise to a sound that a "quiet" blower on a race car would make) the sound went up and down with the surge of RPMs of the engine. (again, I think it might be part of the characteristics of the all new 6.0 L engine)
Well, we drove the '05 Saturday morning...straight from the dealership to our house! Yes, we traded the '03 in on the '05. There is a slight whine in the engine but I feel, like Marc, that it's just normal engine noise. The extra horsepower is great, not that we'll ever really use it...yah, right!...but it's there if you want it. The '05 is fully optioned and I noticed the holding area for the top is insulated with padding on the bottom and around the back, I didn't notice that in the '03, the '05 is definitely quiet with the top up. We did have light wind noise on the drive home but we also had 30 mile an hour winds so it wasn't a good day to judge any car for wind noise. We haven't had the top down yet since it's been cold and rainy yesterday and today but we did cycle it and it seems to work a lot smoother and quieter than the top on the '03. As for the exhaust sound, I can't tell any difference, they all sound great to me! We stayed with Redline Red but we're wondering if we should have bought a different color this time...not that we don't love the red but it sure attracts attention. We've been stopped once, for no front plate, and yesterday we had an 'escort' for a few miles on a country road...maybe black would be less noticeable??

All is well here - I'm getting close to the season I love best - fall and winter - LET IT SNOW! I am sure you are wishing for less of this with having the SSR. .... Hey, I drove a 6 speed manual today - it was awesome. What a blast!!
