Radio question.

I agree with you about the weak signal for the radio

I wonder... Does any one who has the indash radio WITHOUT the 6 disk CD, have reception problems. It might not be the antenna, what if its the radio that's junk.

The same question goes for any one who has swapped in any other radio for the Bose premium and still uses the on glass antenna.

I had the poorest reception of any radio I ever had. Looking from the inside of the SSR I could see a light area in the window antennae and after almost a year I finally talked my dealer into replacing my windshield. What a difference. I now have no problem at all with reception and the radio sounds 100 times better. Don't know if that's your problem, but it fixed mine.

Hi lloger,

I too see about a one-inch light area in my antennae in the windshield. I think that is a weak link or a break in the wire that could cause a very poor reception. I think I will have mine checked out this spring.

Beer,

I had the 6-disc so I can't answer Q#1, but my reception was fine so I don't think it is the radio design. When I replaced the head unit with an aftermarket, my reception stayed very acceptible. I live in a pretty rural area with most stations 30 to 90 miles away and recieve as many as with any other vehicle (more than several). I am sure other antennae might outperform the windshield version, but I tend to think some faulty in-glass antennae made it through production.

On mine there is about a 1 inch section about a third of the way down the window on the passenger side. Is this on everyone's?? lloger, Do you have this on the new windshield?
Those with good reception... Is this light strip on yours?
Is there a defect here or are we seeing things?

Thats where I see mine too, but the last check by dealer didn't turn up a reception problem while the SSR was sitting inside their building. I will be contacting GM as I think we all should who are having this problem.

The one trip in the SSR I had before snowfall was up 401 to London. The 50’s radio station from Detroit cut out about 50 miles earlier than in my other truck. The 74 firebirds had antenna in front windshield, which cut out reception easy also. I’ll be buying more CD’s
I’ll have to look for this light area, is it a void in the wire or bubble in the glass.

Part of the actual wire is lighter than the rest of it. It is very noticible if you are looking for it.

I think some of the windshields had antennas that had a 1-inch (defective area) which also appears as a "faded out" section. I also believe those certain windshields might be defective because of that reason. That is why some of us maybe experiencing bad reception at various times.

Window antenna

Thought I would move some comments on this into a seperate thread. Attached is a photo of what I think is a problem with the antenna. Notice lighter part of antenna wire in picture. I actually found two of these spots on mine.
Lets see if we can get some sort of idea as to how many have this "defect" in the antenna and if you have it, how is radio reception. If you don't, how's your reception?

[Edit] I agree with this idea so I edited out and combined the two threads into one as dingbat suggested [/Edit]

Hey ding,

I just walked out to look at mine and the antenna is the same color all the way to the bottom.

As for reception, I live in the mountains and I can still receive most stations fairly well, but the closer I get to Atlanta, the better it works. In Atlanta, it is perfect!

There are early threads on this same issue. I don't think that there was ever a fix to it. I think we just had to deal with it.
But now there are more of us and if there is a corolation between the antenna defect and the reception we might have some grounds to approach Chevy to have them fix it.

No. The antennai is a constant copper color from one end to the other. My light colored area was only about 8" from the connection point so I had almost no antennae at all.

I know that at least two people did or where having the windshield replaced because of this issue and one other said that the service dept. fixed it with the heat foil in the back window.

I can't get a good pic right now but it isn't as noticable from the outside but from the inside it is about 11/2in down from the bend. It is a lighter shade than the rest.

On my trip to San Antonio, I could get the Austin Station to San Antonio (50miles) then back to Waco(60miles) In town it fades around every corner and I am constantly changing the station and that could be why the paint is coming off the buttons.

Windshield replacement

I discussed my poor radio reception with the service rep at my dealership for almost a year. I don't know what finally got them to agree to change the windshield, but that fixed it. I put XM radio in mine and the output from the XM radio is tied into the antennae lead between the windshield and the stock radio and the XM sounded great. The last time I took it in they said they wanted to pull the dash and check the antennae connection at the radio, but when I explained about the XM they decided it wasn't a connection problem. I was talking to the guy who drives the cars from the check in area back to the service area and just mentioned to him about the light area and the poor reception, and he said as soon as he got my SSR back to the service bay he would go talk to the general manager about the problem. About an hour later the service rep came out and said, " You're getting a new windshield." Just happened to mention it to the right guy I guess.

Just checked mine....I have the one inch "gap" just below the bend at the top of the windshield. Also, if you run your finger on the inside, you can feel the antenna except for the area of the gap. It is smooth.
I thought my reception was weak but when compared to wifes' Maxima, I know its not a receptive or selective.

Dinbat, we have a bonafide gripe here :boxing

P/P

Peace :flag
