A rock blasted my window on Wednesday, I thought I was OK. Thursday I go to get in to go to work and about a 6" crack right down the drivers side from the top.

Anyway the glass guy just left, it coment was a 50000 dollar truck and they hold the molding on with velcro. Can they come up with something better than that?

I think he's talking about the front pillar caps - they're held on with the two bottom plastic caps and some velcro.

How do you remove or readjust the front pillar caps. Mine is not lining up with the roof panels at the top. It is about a quarter inch too high and I would like to re adjust it level.
The top is a snap under the rubber and the bottom is two snaps. It the middle is several velcro strips.

I got a big rock chip in mine and had it replaced about 6 months ago. I was lucky because I had a bad window antennae and the new windshield greatly improved my radio reception.

Glass?

The glass seems more inclined to chipping than other cars I've owned. Mine is peppered with pinpricks. I've never noticed the hits that created them, excpet for the one that generated a small star.

Then I haven't owned a vehicle with this vertical a windshield before.

It's the slope of the hood that provokes the rock chips in the windshield. If the front of the hood were higher (like on a pickup truck or SUV), the geometry would cause more of the rocks to be deflected by the hood or grill instead.

Hey lloger,

When they replaced the windshield did they use an aftermarket or order you one straight from GM ?? Also, does your new windshield carry the GM and SSR logo on it. It should be right in the center of the glass at the bottom ?? Reason I'm asking is cause I'm getting mine replaced next week. Any answers or things to be on the look out for during installation would be of help.

thanks much

I'm not lloger, but you hit my hot button with this one. I don't buy aftermarket glass unless that is the only option available. In the past, I have, and every time, I've been disappointed. The quality control on aftermarked market glass isn't the same as what the General puts in new vehicles. Ripples drive me bonkers. I simply have no tolerance for them. The one aftermarked windshield I bought that didn't have a ripple was off color compared to the side windows.

Factory glass costs more, sometimes a lot more. But I've not been disappointed with it.

I noticed this on a friends SSR today.
He had the DEALERSHIP replace the glass when he bought it due to a defective antenna. Guess what they put in..... AFTERMARKET GARBAGE!!!!

Today was the first time I've seen his SSR since he got the windshield done, and I had forgotten all about it until I was standing next to the right front fender. Seen the window etching in the lower right corner which should not be there, and the lack of the SSR logo in the center. I told him about it and now he's going to be taking it to the dealer real soon to complain...

Also I've found out that the SSR logo being in the glass actually works with insurance companies if you complain about it.

I had a side window replaced with GM glass no problem since all the windows had the logo.

Yep I'm also a firm believer in direct OEM parts. No aftermarket for these trucks.
My dealer said they are getting the windshield from GM, Lansing. My service advisor is on the ball and really helpful. I'll be there the day they do the install. Hope it goes smoothly without a big mess.

OEM specs

Alright, here's a question for all you tech heads or anyone with a service manual.

I'm getting my windshield replaced at the dealership, and I'm trying to get a part number or product number for the Urethane Adhesive that GM uses at the factory to bond the glass to the frame. I'm trying to make sure that the job is done to OEM specifications and parts. Thanks in advance for your help.

**Freezer / Marc / SSR plant employee's ?? Your help would be appreciated.

Lets not go overboard.

I said in my post that I wouldn't buy aftermarket glass unless there was no other choice. But I'm more flexible where it comes to adhesives. With adhesives it's all about proper prep, application, and the correct type gunk, but not necessarly GM gunk. Their gunk comes from the same mixer that most everybody elses dose.

Jeeze guys!

My windshield was hit yesterday on my way to work... :mad just a chip at the moment but with the heat setting in during the day and cool nights it is only a matter of time before a crack starts working its way up/down/all around! Suppose I should see if it can be repaired and avoid all the replacement hassle????? :banghead

This happens to EVERY new car I get...its like a magnet for rocks

Me Too

I can empathize, got a chip in the windshield yesterday during a beautiful Sunday drive. Could not believe it...especially since I have only had the SSR for week.

I plan on having it fixed this week, has anyone had any problems with repairs done on the small cracks (quarter size)?

I've had several stars and chips repaired on my S10 Blazer - the drawback is the star remains visible somewhat, but it shouldn't crack out. Mine have gone through a couple Colorado winter/summer cycles with no additional cracking.

If I get a star on the SSR, however, I'll likely have the windshield replaced. I carry glass coverage on all my vehicles, and while I could require the windshield to be replaced on my Blazer, I'd rather use it as a bargaining chip with my agent - "hey, I've had my Blazer windshield fixed four times - don't hassle me with the SSR, please."

Unless the SSR is going to spend all it's time in the garage between now and when the repair is done, a piece of tape over the star will keep grime out of the crack. Keeping it from getting dirty, is the only way to make sure the crack will be invisible after the repair.

My Turn to Replace the Windshield

Took a hard hit to the windshield on a Sunday cruise to the Oregon Coast. Sounded more like a rifle than a rock. This one actually caused "Twin Stars" so I got two for the price of one.

The NEW factory part number is 15275046. This is not the original part number as upgraded parts receive a new number. I'm assuming the upgrade to be based upon antenna operation. Price is $550 + Installation. I tried to use the Dealer, but too many unanswered questions. Speedy Auto Glass was knowledgeable in acquiring the factory replacement. I must wait up to 10 days for the windshield to arrive. Speedy Auto Glass Tigard Oregon wants me to report my success to the SSR community upon completion of what they say will be a perfect installation. I hope to do exactly that.
