I replaced the battery in my '04 in '09.
I never wait until a battery completely dies before replacing it.
Trying to get that last little bit out of a battery may get you stranded and it's not good for the starter or the charging when it starts getting weak.
Five years for a battery that costs less than $100 is less than $20 per year and if nothing else it gives me peace of mind.:)

I had my '06 Pontiac Vibe in for service just before winter and hte batter in it had a bad cell and I had to have it replaced.
Being stranded and sittin' beside the road or in a parking lot in pleasant weather isn't too bad butin this part of the country its a PIA!:mad

It's interesting that Consumer Reports has listed the Wally World Maxx VERY highly. That would make it a pretty good bargain.
Is that the EverStart MAXX from Wallmart? I'm going to need a new one. It's prob.
over 5 yrs. old and has a dead cell that keeps draining the batery. I don't want to
get stranded out in the middle of nowhere. I really can't afford sev. hundred for a
gell type and it may not last any longer than a reg. type battery. Do they have
more CCA's than the reg. type or anything? Any other benifits besides costing 2-
3 times as much? The R requires the side post type, right?

Thanks,

Tony

Need help please

Hi,

I need some help. Well, there's only so much anyone ca do :glol. Something
is draining the batt. in my :blue:. It might sometimes sit for a few days to
a week at a time. And listening to the radio for a while w/key in the accy.
position shouldn't run it down. 1 place told me the batt. was bad and a-
nother said it was good. I really don't want to just throw money at it and
still have the same problem. I really don't like the thought of being strand-
ed in the middle of nowhere. Could the alt. have gone bad already? Should
these veh. have come w/a higher amp alt. from the fact. to begin with?
What is the stock amperage anyway? I've seen higher 1's on ebay, 170 or
something 1 think. This is very aggrevating as it was doing just fine a yr.
or so ago. Could the ign. switch cause this all of a sudden? Any ideas as
to what could be causing it to do this? I have NO clue when it comes to the
electrical system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE
HELP if possible.

Thanks,

Tony

Just go to a reliable place to have the battery tested with a load on it along with the
alternator output. This should not be a big deal anywhere. Here in Florida, I purchase a
good battery with 6-8 year warranty and I never have to purchase a new one again
because NONE last that long. When I purchased my 2005 a year ago in NC with only
3,000 miles on it, the battery was bad. It did not go dead and worked but did not sound right
and when checked, it was only putting out about 250 amps.

Still ticking

I have 53000 miles on my 2005 and still have the original battery. It will go dead after my writing but way outlasted any battery I have ever had. The reason or at least my thoughts are that it is out of the engine heat. My R sat on the car lot for one year before I bought it.:yellow::yellow:

Good thread...thanks. Changing a battery is not difficult but....That little sucker is heavy and will kill your back without too much effort...plus you will have to take the old one back to where you bought it for core exchange or disposal. Any doubts let an experienced person do it.

Ron:

Thanks for your write up.

It made my first SSR battery change today easy.

After some shopping around I was able to get a Delco Series 78 battery for $89 with the core.

So I'm good for 6 more years now.

Regards

Jerry

My 05 (04 production) is original with 30K miles. I'm replacing it as soon as I can get to it. No use waiting for the failure, cuz' it won't happen at a good time.

Good idea, Catbert.

Batteries rarely croak while sitting in front of a Battery Shop.

Battery Replacement - Thanks

Ron:

Thank you for the original post on how to handle a battery change. I changed my 06 today with very little hiccups. Because mine is a 2006 LPR the nuts were a little different on the battery cables; 10mm. Everything else was fine.

It's posts like this that make this forum such a valuable site and why I am proud to be a life member.

I at 56000 miles and six years of age have changed my battery. I searched the forum and found the order of which to do it in. I placed a 2amp charger on it and then took the old out and put the new in. No lost settings no cuts or other injuries and without a swear work. Thank you all.

My 2005 with 3,000 miles on it had to have the battery replaced last year when I purchased it in North Carolina. It started but the amperage was down and did not sound strong. I think too many go way too long before changing them. Technically, anything over 3 years should be replaced. Itis a pretty cheap investment for all of the problems it could cause.

With 59K miles and 7.5 years operation - I just replaced the battery on Ol' 1740... The Delco price at the dealership was in line with the others out there - so I went with the 7 year (was only $5 more than the 6 year) battery.

Thanks for the instructions!!!! Took about 1/2 hour w/ a cig break to talk to the neighbor a bit! :flag

I guess I let the SSR sit a bit too long - been putting the miles on the new Sierra and hadn't cranked over the SSR for a few days - oooops... was on borrowed time on the old battery!!!

I had better check mine... gonna do mikes fans in the next week or so and will be disconnecting anyway. I have found the optimas are hit or miss. one lasted like 4 years. the other almost 8 years. I believe that the gels are meant to be dischaged and recharged without a negative effect. good if it sits in storage alot. or just get a battery tender, they are inexpensive.
