I've had my SSR for 3 weeks now and yesterday after about 5 minutes of driving the SSR engine overheated warning came on! temp was all the way at 260! I had to limp home and put SSR to dealer today. Anyone else have this problem?? I have a 2004 SSR with the 5.3 engine. Any responses are welcomed.
Thanks,
Jim:silver:

You have a problem.....if under warranty, I would get it checked. If not, I would call Mike in Az.

An '03-'04 will not go above 210 even in traffic and 80 degrees out if the fan is running correctly....or at least that is my experience.

Mine did this, the OEM fan failed and was replaced by the dealer under warranty. The new fan still didn't work well in stop/go/bumper-to-bumper traffic, took the OEM fan off and replaced it with Mike in AZ's plug and play replacement. He and JimG have made an aftermarket fan available to SSR owners. Put the OEM fan in the attic just in case if/when I sell her the new owner would want the original fan. Check out Mike's website www.simple-engineering.com

Mine was the fuse (blown when the dealer jump started the car, and hooked the cables to the wrong location). A way to check the fan for proper operation is to turn on the A/C. The fan is supposed to come on when the A/C is turned on. If it doesn't come on then it could be the fuse.

Is that fuse no 44? How do I remove it?

And can I get it at NAPA.
Thanks

Been there don that

I had the same problem with my 04. Solved the problem with the twin fan set up that Jim G. It is is a dual Spal Fan set up. The stock fan was replaced by the dealer once and it still ran hot in traffic. The dual fan setup drops right in where the stock fan goes and the truck never gets over 210 now, stop and go or not. I live in the desert and it gets extremely hot. Get a hold of Jim G and he can get the info to you.:purple:

For those who don't know, Colvin used my SSR as the prototyping vehicle when they developed the kit Jax mentioned above, at my urging.

I have had the setup in my SSR for almost exactly a year now (360 days actually :)), and it works flawlessly.

This is what GM should have done in the first place.

stogey: Mike in AZ and I both have explained in earlier postings on "overheating" and "thermodynamics" why changing thermostats provides only minimal benefits.

Dop a search using those search terms, and you will see this is VERY limited in its impact. The right solutions involve betetr and more reliable fans, and in some more seriopus cases even better radiators.

See some of my earlier postings using as search keys "dual Spal" and "thermodynamic".

The 230 degrees is really not that bad, as that's just a few degrees higher than when the fan is set to come on anyway (226 degrees). For a lot of us, it was a past mindset that we had to overcome in the initial stages of owning our SSRs. Many of us were not accustomed to such high operating temperatures in vehicles.

Before any of you do anything about the stock fan, you might want to first check to see if the fan fuse is still good and is not blown. It is fuse #37 in the diagram (60 amp), and is located in the uppermost left hand corner, nearest the alternator.

I now have both Mike in AZ's auxiliary fan and his main cooling fan replacement in my SSR. I'm happy with my setup. My stock main cooling fan was working fine, but I decided to seize the opportunity at the Springfield Super Rally to get his replacement main cooling fan at that time, and save on shipping and installation.

A fanatic friend of mine in town, "Jax", has the dual Spal fan in his SSR, and he is very pleased with its performance. In the event that your stock fan fails, if under warranty you obviously can get a sock replacement fan, or go with either of the two aftermarket fan options. I'm sure you would be pleased with either of the aftermarket ones.

BTW, here is a link to just one of the threads on this forum pertaining to the operation of the SSR stock fans and overheating issues:

thanks alex, i,ll try not to freak out when the temp climbs a bit, never had a vehical run as warm, still thinking, about changing the oem fan after cruising the link you included, thanks again glen
I'm going to disagree with Alex.....My '03 does not go above 210. I'm on my second OEM fan and I travel in some stop and go traffic in 90 degree heat (so your mileage may vary...as they say). I would guess that something is wrong...I'm gathering from all the posts here that the '05-'06s will run a little hotter.

Let us know what you find out....I'd like to know if I was wrong. :D

I would change the fan period ............................

Working or not!!!!
Lets face it, it's not if it's when the fan fails and it will fail.
I replaced mine with Mike's OEM replacement and never have to babysit the temp gauge anymore and have been running the factory fan settings for sometime now with no problems.....:thumbs

My 06 runs right at 210 even in traffic. One thing that helps to keep the temp down in traffic is to leave room between you and the vehicle in front. I try to leave 5 or 6' so that my SSR is breathing air that isn't directly out of the tailpipe of the car in front. I know it's not much cooler but even 5 degrees I think helps (plus if someone rearends me, they don't get the front of the truck too). If its really hot, I also make sure the AC is at least on speed 3 so that the fan is on. So far, haven't had any overheating issues which is really good news since my first truck did it 3 times.

Mike in AZ post describing fan logic

I also was able to torture test my 06 SSR with its "Mike in AZ" replacement radiator cooling fan (shrouded puller), auxiliary fan (pusher), transmission cooler and my Diablo Predator "91 Octane" tune today. It was 109 in Folsom, CA this afternoon. My temp gauge never went over 215 (even going up the big hill out of Folsom). :thumbs
