Hi All,
I have a 2003 SSR with 12,000 miles that has a knock. Local wrench thought it was bearings. He replaced them, knock is still there. Couple of retired wrenchs in my area suggested taking it to a Chevy/GM service center to have it analyzed and repaired. I'm in North Port, Fl. Any suggestions for a good shop in the area?
Thanks

Especially your LOCATION and the year of your SSR, like the rest of us. Then go the the left side and click on "Signature". Also put the year of your SSR in your "Signature", and anything else you want to show in your posts, and we can help you better if you have a problem. When you finish click the "SAVE" box.

Hard to give any diagnosis of a noise without hearing it, but i would inspect flywheel for a crack next, then while i haven't seen it since the extinction of carburetors, i might think a loose piece of carbon causing severe spark knock.? Due to age and low mileage its a possibility.
Also check balancer for looseness. Maybe remove drive belts and listen.

GM has had problems with an issue that is called piston slap. I have a 2000 Corvette with about 65,000 miles and on a cold start it makes a noise similar to a valve tapping. After a few minutes the noise is gone so I have assumed that it is a collapsed lifter that fills up after the engine runs. I have heard a lot about the piston slap phenomenon and Chevy did have problems around 2000 models. Piston slap would indicate to me a large clearance between the piston and cylinder wall.
