FIXED: Heads up--Discount Tire will only install stock size tires

PLEASE ALSO SEE MY NEXT POST -- #3

FYI: I just got back from my local Discount Tire Dealer here in Jacksonville, FL.

We were ready to do a deal on 315/35/20's when the sales guy tells me they can't install them due to safety regulations.

I ask "who's safety regulations" and he says after some prodding "the company's as of last week". They will install only stock sizes according to the rim and car manufacturers specs.

So I went next door to the Tire Mart and after some squeezing in the appropriate places they are within $10 of the Discount deal out the door and have no problem completing the job.

I am wondering if there was a legal problem or......

If you guys who recently did deals with Discount Tire still have your contacts at your local store, it would be interesting to see if they now have to follow this new corporate policy or if it even exists.

Would also be interesting to hear from our Supporting Vendor on this point.

UPDATE:

I decided to call another local Discount Tire store here to validate that the new policy was in effect. The manager at that store said that he suspects that the other store didn't check the "Rear" box and used the "front" rim size for the 315's.

NET, NET, He wants the business and did the deal with an additional $15 off for the grief. He is also going to direct order the tires from Nitto so they will be "factory fresh". They'll be in the store by the end of the week.

The 255/40/19 and 315/35/20 will be $1,200 OTD. You may have to squeeze a little but they will do the deal.

Now thats why I liked Discount Tire in the first place. I now have a new store to use.

Jerry, you should probably put an amendment into #1 post, as it is a bit of a debbie downer on discount tires, and not everyone will follow through reading.

Oh damn, I see you have, but I missed it - maybe Please See My next post # 3 for some of us that don't spend enough time on details!

last august discount tire in daytona installed my 315/35r/20 michlen latitudes and 275/45/19 no problems, although it took three techs to get the rears on the rims, what a differnce in overall driving.

UPDATE:

I happened by the Discount Tire store where I finally had my new Nittos installed last week. They mentioned that the safety issue/memo regarding mounting the larger Nittos has been discussed at all levels of the corporation and that there is no problem with mounting tese tires.

So thanks Discount Tire Corporate. Oh yea do you know where the rebates are?? How about a Forum sponser discount lie you used to do.
