when i'm driving with the top up and hit a bump , the stowage compartment lid extension ( flipper ) ratlles. absolutely no rattle when the top is down. is this common with the ssr , if not , how does one fix it. i've looked and every thing looks good and tight

Look to see that you have the two rubber bumpers in the upper hinge for the extension panel. If not, get a pair and install them......
Do you have any issues putting top up and down? Either way you might want to check for cracks around the hinge area on the flipper panel where the cylinder attaches. Also, the flipper panel can separate causing it to vibrate. Everything is repairable just need to find the cause.
There is a video by Retro Car Guy on SSR hartop adjustments. In my case I found my rattle was behind the passenger seat. I was able to repair by wrapping the bracket with soft fuzzy velco as described in the last section of the video.
